The Schengen Treaty limits US citizens to a stay in the EU countries of 90 days only out of 180. Without a visa for an extended stay in the zone you cannot stay. This is the same limitation that their citizens have when visiting the US/Canada.
Thus we left the zone for a total of 92 days when we went to Croatia, Turkey and the old East Bloc. This was the number one factor in our route planning. As of Dec this year, all those countries will be in Schengen with the exception of Croatia and Turkey. It just got a little harder to do 6 month trips in Europe.
Regards to all.
