Hi,

Our Croatia stay is now up to probably 10 weeks - early August - October 17. I have read all the threads, trip reports and blogs, so am not asking you to repeat what you have already written. My question is: if you could stay one place longer than all the rest, or if there is one thing you did not get to do over all others, what is it? We will have a lease car - no Bosnian or Montenegro insurance, so may take bus trips there (or possibly a second short term rental). I am so excited that we will have a decent amount of time to see this fascinating country. Thanks for your time...

You should think about taking a week-long cruise. There are many gullet-style boats that only have 5-10 rooms and the cruises dont really "go" anywhere. Meaning no major ports of calls like Dubrovnik or Split. Instead you would be crusing around and hitting the different little islands that you would have never been able to see on your own.

Or learn how to sail. There are also many week-long sailing schools available throughout the country.

I think Tony's idea is fantastic.

He got me curious so I Googled CROATIA PRIVATE BOAT CRUISE and a ton of links came up. Some of these gulet rentals are pricey, but this page indicates you could do a weeklong cruise with food in a double-bunk cabin with shower for about €1000 per person.

I think this is the kind of thing you could pre-book, but you could also do it on the fly - any coastal village in Croatia will have someone who knows someone who can recommend a good boat/captain for such a cruise.

Another, but similar idea, is to charter a single 2-berth cabin in a sailboat. Check out: Sailing Europe.

And in regards to the gulet cruises. There are definitely plenty of operations where you can find down to 500 euros a person.

Thanks for the suggestions - unfortunately, the sailing probably won't work for us. My husband has a tendency towards motion sickness (not terrible and would enjoy a day sail), but sleeping below might get him. Also, one of the trade offs of going to Europe for 6 months, is having a lower budget and 2000 E a week is over it for these USers. But, those sails sound like amazing fun and it should be great info for others....

Hi,

Thanks - he can deal with a ferry ride, and Hvar is definitely on the list. I have heard good things about APARTMENTS DUJMOVIC, and have been communicating with Ana.

We are having a great time so far - are north of Nice, France staying in a gite in a beautiful campground - www.fermederiola.com. Next stop is the Cinque Terre.
