Inspired by the recent thread started by Maria, I felt it might be time for me to jump in with my '09 (late May-June) Croatia plans just now taking form. I'm trying to piece together plans for the Croatian coast, with options to be reviewed by our travel friends - another couple. I'm spending lots of time following recommendations and surfing for good ideas. I feel like there is a lot out there, and this is a good time to visit this area. The online and Slowphoto photos are inspirational. I'm planning a trip of 3-4 weeks and there are just so many options. We have never visited Croatia.
If we feel ambitious, we might tack on some time to see a bit of Slovenia. A family friend lived there, and I'm curious to know more about it and see its Alpine areas.

I've used the advice of Ann (Hawaii) to consider a rental on Hvar and an accommodation in Dubrovnik. (Ann - I'll be sending a PM. Are you around?) I'm trying to choose a gulet cruise of about a week. I'm also toying with the idea of seeing a bit of Slovenia. Basically, we would like to spend some time in Dubrovnik, a week in a rental on either Hvar, Korcula or another island, and some time on a boat.

If anyone has some input at this point, I'd love to hear it. I wish there were more posted reviews on SlowTrav.

Hi, Linda. Yes, we're around, having just returned from a wonderful trip to Puglia and Rome. I'm going to attach our itinerary in Croatia since more people seem to be interested in going there, and it worked well if you're going from north to south. Gail did much of it in reverse from south to north, I think. I'd also recommend the Croatia forum at Fodors, which offered me a lot of tips 3 years ago. I don't know how flexible your schedule is, but I do think September is a better time to visit if you have any interest in swimming - the water would be a lot warmer than it was in May, and it's just too gorgeous to pass up, especially on a boat trip. BTW, I never did reviews of the places we stayed but will be happy to answer any questions.

Aloha, Ann

Thanks for all, Ann. You did some great research to come up with these accommodations.
I'm inspired!
Yes, there's been quite a lot about Croatia on the board. I'll be curious to hear about Terry's adventures.
I'll be back on the board soon when I'm able to put together a more specific list of questions.

Linda, we've only been to Rab and Dubrovnik and that was by way of day trips. If I can help I will, but doubt that I can give anything of value. But, do ask - I'll answer if I can.

I hope maybe what I posted on Maria's thread is of help.

We enjoyed our time in the ports and are really happy we have visited before the country got really popular. The Italians are vacationing in Croatia and buying up land and properties. At least that was our understanding. The country is growing. Go and enjoy it.

I don't want to seem redundant since I'm new to the forum, but on a couple of threads I posted that I had just returned...and a link to our personal travel journal..there's all sorts of pictures, a trip blog, embedded videos in the trip reports, info on a private driver..

We will be adding more..

We went to Dubrovnik, Korcula, Hvar, Split and Zagreb, with side day trips to Mostar, Pocitelj in Bosnia and Perast, Kotor in Montenegro

If I can answer any questions for you, just
let me know!

Wow. Where2Next, I just spent some time with your SmileBox slideshows on your website. Fabulous! I'll have to look into that.
And I was greatly inspired by your photos. Thanks!
Looks like we have a few threads going now on Croatia. I'll be checking all of them as I try to make some plans.
Thanks to all.

As I am sure you are all finding out, Croatia is the next hot spot, right after Italy. And so close too.

We have enjoyed our visits to both Dubrovnik and Rab, the people have always been very nice - with the exception of the one waitress in Dubrovnik, who was still very much of the Eastern Block behaviour. Of course on our third visit to that rest. she was a bit nicer. Wink

Everyone going, enjoy, explore and discover the old and the new of this country.
