Help! We are flying into Munich and had planned five nights there as a base in and round the city before catching the train to Salzburg BUT I am finding that Oktoberfest accommodation is just too expensive and rare to find. So I am now thinking maybe we stay out of Munich but am reliant on public transport as driving in Germany scares me. What do you suggest? Neuschwanstein is a must while in the area - the rest, well it just depends where we end up. Any suggestions where to stay? Thanks Kym
Go right to Bavaria...it is absolutely beautiful there... and I would suggest staying in or around Fussen... but, I really think you would want a car in that area.
I can't imagine being able to fully enjoy Bavaria without a car...it is so very lovely and so much to see ... maybe I am wrong, but I don't think public transportation would allow you to really experience it to the fullest.
BTW, we drove all over Bavaria and along the Romantic Road... and did not find it difficult or dangerous.

I agree that driving in Germany is usually not any scarier than here. I can see why the Autobahn would be intimidating (though you can stay to the right and let the fast cars zip by you without a problem) but you can take the smaller roads if you they make you feel safer.
You can certainly take trains and buses but I think you will find it limiting in the Fussen area, and may not suit your schedule.
Garmische-Partenkirchen would also be a nice place to visit, and it is quite accessible by train. From there perhaps you could find a bus tour to Fussen. And from there you could easily train to Innsbruck, where again you would not need a car and would find lots to do on foot and using local transportation options.
Have fun. Linda
