We were planning on spending a few days during the last week of June in Vienna, but are having second thoughts because there is a huge soccer match on month long. Finding accommodations is tough and I am getting concerned about huge crowds.
Our current itinerary has us in Budapest until June 24 and flying out of London on June 28. We wanted to go somewhere close to Budapest we could take a short train ride from on June 24 and fly out of for London on June 27. Any thoughts from this well-traveled crowd?
Prague is one very viable alternative. We took the train there from Budapest a few years back. There have been a number of threads about Prague on this forum which you might want to check out (using the "Find" option above).
Alternatively, you might try Salzburg or other areas of the Austrian Salzkammergut. You could go by train to either Linz or Salzburg by changing in Vienna. Picking up a rental car at either of those locations for this option would probably be a good idea. There have also been several discussions of this area on these boards as well. Again, enter a search through "Find" above.
What about Bratislava? There may be some spill over from Vienna as it is so close, but it would give you another (former) East European capital, coming up in the world fast. I have not been there for a few years, but it has a lovely old town. Or head north to Krakow, plenty of flights from there to be UK. A really beautiful place.
