Austria is known for its desserts (cakes, Sachertorte, Apfelstrudel, Topfenstrudel, Palatschinken and sweet dumplinks with fruit inside like Zwetschkenknödel). We also use lots of meat (pork, beef and some chicken) with mixed salad, rice and/or potatoes (those potatoes from the "Waldviertel region" are the best I think. Dumplings are very typical for Austria: There is Leberknödelsuppe ("liver dumplings" in soup), Hascheeknödel and Tiroler Knödel (Dumplings with meat or sausage inside), fruit dumplings (sweet dumplings with fruit inside),...

Well, there is a coffee shop in a beautiful Viennese House of the Biedermeier period at Lerchenfelder Str. 13, it is called "Kandinsky" (Monday to Saturday, 10-22 h, closed on Sundays). They have excellent coffee and Apfelstrudel and great breakfasts starting at 10 a.m. as well as some nice snacks. Really nice atmosphere and not too touristy, certainly not expensive and the owner, Armin, is worth meeting (He is very nice and helpful and funny). Viennese waiters in coffee shops take pride in working slowly, so be warned, enter a coffee shop only if you have lots of time and are not too hungry.

Restaurants: There is one called "Impressione" that offers Italian and other European meals also at Lerchenfelder Str. 13 in the seventh district. It´s not easy to find the entrance, if you do not know the restaurant. I can recommend their pizza. In Austria you should try mushrooms, if there are still fresh ones. Autumn is mushroom time.
You can try typical Austrian meals at the restaurant "Spatzennest", too: Spatzennest, 7th district, St. Ullrichsplatz 1, phone +43 1 5261659

If you want to get to know the authentic "Heurigen" (wine taverns), I would recommend o go to "Sievering" rather than "Grinzing". A very beautiful place is the “Durchhaus” www.durchhaus.at at Lerchenfelder Str. 13 to Neustiftgasse 16 near the Museum Quarter, where you can find the restaurant "Impressione" and the "Kandinsy" coffee-shop that I recommend for brunch and as an internet cafe.
