I have a layover in Munich and am wondering if there are ATM's in that airport? Is Germany on the euro yet? Thanks!

Yes and yes. Germany has been using the Euro since its inception. Munich Airport is one of the most modern in all of Europe. ATM's will be no problem.

The Munich Airport is wonderful. Easy to navigate and lots of amenities. Great shopping, nice places to sit. There's even an authentic Italian cafe, staffed by young people from Italy. But for us last year, the highlight of our 3 hour layover was "Legoland" - a play space for kids filled with giant Lego blocks. It was a lifesaver as we traveled with 2 year old twins. Smile

The Munich airport is not only beautiful and well-planned, but it is my favorite!
(Yes on the ATMS! But notify your bank first and if the first ATM machine doesn't work with your card, go to another one... sometimes depends on the bank--sometimes what looks like an ATM is only for EC cards (Eurocheck-bank cards)... so beware out and about in the towns--usually the ATMS that will work for you say "international" on them)

Back to the airport.... With newly opened terminal 2.... I've been there dozens of times and you know the best thing about it? You can park right in front (I mean right in front!) for free and usually leave your car there for the hour and sometimes more that you can spend while waiting for a visitor or helping a friend check in... Especially post-9/11 and in a major city, where in the world can you consistently find (available) parking places right in front of check-in or arrivals (and for free???) It's truly unbelievable...

Sure beats the mess that Seatac is! ((Here you can sometimes hardly get through to do the drive by at the curb!)))

Infrastructure done right---the Bavarian way!

Speaking of Munich, we are heading to Florence next week, and have a four and half hour layover in Munich before we fly to Pisa (insert minor grumbling :-)) Is the city accessible from the airport in this short of a timespan (maybe for a quick bite to eat and a short stroll), or is the hassle of going through security and the train ride there and back just too much to cram into such a timeframe? Many thanks,

-Richard

The airport is a ways from the center of Munich-- about a 30 minute train ride as I recall. Plus you would have to come back in through security, which can always result in some unexpected delays. I know 4-1/2 hours seems a long time, but I think it would be very difficult to do much.

I can't remember what might be in the area right around the airport, but maybe you could have a good meal (and a beer or two) at an interesting place in the airport just to get a bit of Bavarian flavor--

Maybe Sarah or someone else will have some different input though!

Kaydee's right-- there are trains that are pretty quick, the "S-Bahn" trains, which are partially above and below ground. They run often, but take about 30 minutes... There are two that connect the city and airport. The S-1 takes the westerly route, the S-8 takes the easterly one.

There are two types of trains on the subway system--S- or U-Bahns. S- is a 'suburban' train and U is an underground (really the subway). The U-bahn trains are really reliable and run typically on a 10-min schedule. The S-bahn, however, run about every 30 minutes, are subject to all kinds of weather/freight train crossings/mechanical failures... other types of possible obstacles--and they often run really late or get stuck somewhere... One of the biggest areas of slowdown is by the east railroad or 'Ostbahnhof.' All the S-bahns (or 90%) pass through the Ostbahnhof, so there's always a good chance that things don't move as swiflty as expected... So I would avoid doing taking an S-bahn such a long way and back on a tight schedule.

So IMO taking the train into town is too risky. But that's not to say that you couldn't do something with those 4.5 hours. Here's my suggestion:

Munich is too far away, but there are two little towns very close to the airport that are really worth a short visit: Erding and Freising. Freising is the larger of the two. I prefer Erding and would recommend going there. It is really quaint, it's easy to find your way around, and it has a really lovely old town with alovely Cathedral/Church.

I actually took my sister to both of these two towns two years ago after she arrived from the airport. We had time before our next group (aunt and cousin) arrived- maybe 1.5 hours- We went to Erding, had breakfast and walked around in the early mroning on a sunny June day. It was perfect! We went back to get the otehrs and found out their flight had been delayed a few hours... So then we went for a quick visit to Freising.

I had a car then, but there's no reason why you couldn't go by taxi. (I think Erding is serviced by the S-bahn, but not the same train as the airport). I'd say they aren't more than ten-fiteen minutes by car MAX...

There are plenty of places to get something to eat... and even some really nice shops in both, Erding especially. To get back you could arrange for a taxi pick up--I would talk to the taxi drivers at the airport. There's also usually a number you can call to order a taxi ahead of time. You could even try to do this at the info counters--they speak good English and probably; can help you with this. Many of the cab drivers speak good English, too. SO I would just pre-arrange a pick-up (from Erding or Freising) from the airport. Leave plenty of time to get back, check in, maybe get another cab for the rare occasion that your cabbie doesn't come or something.

Have fun!

One other quick thing: Check to make sure your flights are running on time, and that it is okay to leave the security area.. I don't know if leaving and coming back in changes anything about your status on the flight...(?) They obviously assume that you are in the airport (and could potantially page you at some point if there were any issues). I assume not, but I would just check with the airlines to be sure...

If your first flight comes in kinda late, you might want to scrap the leaving the airport idea... there are lots of nice little restaurants and cafes in the airport... and you can get regional cuisine... Have a good (warm, if you can) pretzel with butter! And a Helles (lager). YUM!!!
