Hi Everybody, What would you suggest I do with a 1-day layover in Amsterdam? I should be arriving around 11:30am and will be leaving the next morning. I'd like to see the Ann Frank House, but don't know how to best spend the rest of the day. I'm really open to anything.
Two excellent museums leap to mind: Rembrandt and Van Gogh, but two in one day may be like eating two rich cakes back to back. You can also sit down to a leisurely rijsttafel pigout. I never miss it when I go to Amsterdam.
Between a rich museum and a rich meal, why not make a detour to the Hash museum to see if anything in the museum boutique will help your digestion and prepare your art buzz...
BTW Lisa, a timesaver is to secure your tickets to the Anne Frank House through their website. And I'd leave plenty of time for just walking around Amsterdam, particularly the Jordaan and canal area, and riding a canal boat around.
I have had one day layovers in Amsterdam twice. I stayed at the Hotel Piet Hein in the Museum district both times. On the first trip, I caught a 5:00 pm short concert at small hall of the Concertgebouw (walking distance from the hotel) and a outdoor concert on the main canal that evening. The next morning I went to the Rijksmuseum (about a 10 15 minute walk) before going back to the airport for my flight back to the US that afternoon. On the second trip, we walked through Vondel park and then went to the Ann Frank house but it was not open when we got there on that Saturday afternoon. The next morning we walked through the city and to the Van Gogh house and then caught a boat on the canals back to our hotel before we left.
On the first trip, I almost missed my flight because the Airporter bus was late picking me up and stopped at a number of other hotels for pickups on the way to the airport. On the second trip, I used the train from the airport to the main train station and then a tram to the museum district. I took the tram and train back to the airport also. It was cheaper and less nerve racking for me.
