Hi I know this is a "crystal ball" type of question, but I'd appreciate your help. We are doing a river cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam from the 27th Dec to the 10th Jan. We are prepared for the cold but I'd like to know if we can expect snow?
Very possible! Particularly in central Europe, the first serious bands of winter snow often arrive in the second half of December. So it is probable that you will encounter snow at some stage during this two week journey.
With a traverse of some 1900km this should be a wonderful journey, taking in areas that have very different climates. Snow is more likely in the middle parts of the cruise (on the canal section between the Donau and the Main). But naturally conditions vary from year to year. Thank you for your reply, Nicky. We are hoping for snow. I am even considering adding on a few days in the Alps to make sure. We are very much looking forward to the trip.
I was in Amsterdam a few years back for the month of January. No snow and temperatures ranging from -3 to +5 C. Many days were wet but not subject to downpours
