Has anyone taken the train from Venice/Mestre or Trieste into Slovenia..then picked up a rental car to drive to Dubrovnik? We're trying to get around the high cost of renting in Italy and driving into Crotia. And what rental company do you suggest in Slovenia-Crotia. Sara L.

Sara, My friend Ruth and her husband traveled between Italy and Croatia last year, but I don't remember the details.
I'm going to email her this thread and ask her to describe their journey for you. (They're out of town right now, so it may be a couple of days before she replies.)

There is one direct train a day from Venice to Ljubljana, EC 61 "Casanova" which leaves Venice S. Lucia at 15:46, and taks 4 hours. You could rent a car there, or take another train to Zagreb (2:20). You can find schedules here under "International Transport": http://www.slo-zeleznice.si/en/

There are at least 6 busses daily from Trieste to Opatija/Rijeka and the journey time is 2--2.5 hours. This is a great central location to explore the whole area right for onward travel also. Try www.auto-europe.com and www.economycarrentals.com

Sorry to be so late in replying to this question. My husband and I did travel from Venice into Croatia for a two week trip. We did end up renting a car from SIXT at Piazzale Roma. It was an easy drive to Opatija mentioned by someone else in replies. It was a bit more expensive, but my husband checked into options of flying, train, or boat and they were all either inconvenient or expensive also. Since you are also traveling to Slovenia, maybe it is more convenient to rent from there. Sorry I haven't been more help. Croatia is fabulous by the way. Try to get to Plitvice Lakes National Park. It is breathtaking. Also, we really enjoyed Mostar, with its split city between muslim and catholic. Recent military activity is still evident there, so gives you a feel of the conflict and destruction that was done, unlike the coastal areas which have all but been rebuilt with no signs of damage left. Good luck and have a great time. Ruth
