Helene,

I stayed at this place, which is only a five minute walk to the Diocletian Palace. The owners couldn't have been nicer and more accommodating, and the room was perfectly appointed with comfortable beds, pillows, linens, modern bathroom, kitchen/and seating area. Also cable TV.

I've written a review but publication is still pending. Good luck with your selection. I think you will love Split.

Hello!

We stayed at Hotel Peristil and loved it!

I give them 4 stars (no elevator) and would stay there again in a heartbeat!

Our room was the famous 304.

You can view pictures of the room and the all you can eat breakfast menu in our photo albums.

Just go into our website link below, into Croatia, then Split...if you notice the bonus album section HUNGRY? we show a picture of a great smoothie place in Split we recommend

We enjoyed our 2 full days there, if you would like a copy of Sights to See list for Split, just let me know!

K.

DUBROVNIK

We stayed at the Hotel Uvala in Lapad Bay

the bus stop was nearby and it was 8 kuna into town for a 15 minute ride very easy to do.

I recommend this hotel with caution as you will see from the pictures. The bathtub is VERY VERY high and access is tricky. I'm 5 feet 1 and my husband had to help me. Breakfast was included!

Follow the steps above for seeing the Split albums just go into Dubrovnik.

Also check the HUNGRY? album again for cheap eats suggestion DBV.

ps....

can someone tell me what i'm doing wrong the my url signature! ( I've fixed it! )

Sorry to hear about Villa Stina being booked for your dates - it was special.

As for Dubrovnik, we stayed at Apartments Ljiljana, and were very very happy there. The view from our veranda was priceless (see photo below), and Ljiljana was a pleasure to deal with. Comfortables beds, very clean and roomy.

I would recommend this rental with a qualification, though. While the location is in the lovely Ploce neighborhood of Dubrovnik, with an amazing view of the harbor, it is situated on a hill. To walk into the Old Town takes about 5 - 7 minutes (downhill), but coming back takes longer, and it can be a steep climb near the end. I welcomed the walk, but it may not be for everyone.

I wrote a review of this rental, still pending publication. The other nice thing I liked about this apartment was that we had on-site parking, which is at a premium in Dubrovnik.

There is another place that comes highly recommended by other Slow Travelers called Villa Adriatica. I saw its location while I was there, and it looks like a lovely place to stay. Directly on the harbor and just outside the Ploce Gate.

Good luck hunting!

Teaberry, thanks for the information. The difference in price between Ljiljana and Adriatica is 30 euro per night, with Adriatica more expensive. Any thoughts?

I stayed at the Hotel Peristil , which is located in Diocletian's Palace, in Split for 7 days in October 2007. It is a family-run hotel/B&B and is quite lovely. The breakfast, which was included, was very good.

The hotel was very clean and recently renovated. The rooms were quite large by European standards. I loved the place.

I stayed in Hotel Stari Grad, which is actually a B&B, within the walled city of Dubrovnik in October 2007. The rooms were quite large and very clean. The B&B had a roof-topped patio where breakfast was served when the weather was nice. Otherwise, it was open from early morning to late evening and had a lovely view of Dubrovnik. I enjoyed staying within the walls of Dubrovnik.

I would highly recommend both places and would happily return on my next visit.

FYI - I am actually not a new member, but a returning member. I formerly had the screen name of Amica.

Well, I imagine one of the things you are paying for is the location and proximity to the Ploce Gate and the Old Town. And, as I said in my previous post, you will have to walk about 15 minutes, with one steep uphill part, if you stay at Ljiljana. But you will have free on-site parking at Ljiljana. I guess it may depend on what you are looking for in your accommodations.

As for Split, I would refer you to this other travel site, where some of these places get nice reviews. Here is another list of inns and private accommodations that may interest you, although I cannot attest to any of them, some of them look really nice.

Hope that helps.
