Hi Does anyone know Berlin well enough to tell which is the better suburb to stay - Kreuzberg (Mehringdam u-bahn station) or Prenzlauer Berg (Schonhauser Allee u-bahn station). I would like a spot easy to access the main tourist location but also cafes, restaurants and supermarkets. Thanks Kym
I stayed in Prenzlauer Berg a block or so from the Schonhauser Allee station for two weeks in 2007, and I loved it. It fulfills your requirements completely - there is an abundance of public transport right there, and all manner of food shops, cafes, and restaurants.
Kreuzberg is also suppose to be very cool to stay in - but I loved living in Prenzlauer Berg - can't wait to get back there, actually.
We stayed in the Schonhauser Allee Apartments in 2007 which were in walking distance from the Alexanderplatz and easy access to the city from Schonhauser Allee station. There were supermarkets and restaurants nearby. There should be a review of those apartments here in SlowTrav because that's how I found it.
