Cycling in Austria

I’m planning a cycling trip in Austria in mid June. I’ve found an Italian organization that has good prices for self guided tours GiroLibero. I’m looking at 3 of their tours: Salzburg and the 10 Lakes, Passau Vienna, Tauern Valley. (in Italian, but there is a map of the route)

I see that 2 of them are mostly flat and even a bit downhill. While I don’t want to kill myself, I’d like to get a bit of exercise. It looks like the 10 lakes tour is the only one that is a bit hilly, but it looks complicated, with lots of transfers via rail or boat.

Has anyone cycled these paths? Which would you recommend?

Thanks for any info.

I haven't cycled these paths, but I have visited all of these areas. Salzburg and the 10 Lakes is definitely hiller and will give you more exercise. It is also IMHO by far the prettiest route. Salzburg is one of my favourite cities in Europe. I've skied (downhill and cross-country) at several of the stops on this route, and they were all really beautiful countryside. That's my vote!

Thanks for your input Marion. I've had a slight change of plans. It looks like I am too late to book the self guided tours so I've decided to wing it on my own. And since the 10 lakes tour involves a lot of transfers, I have decided to combine the Krimml Passau and Passau Vienna to make the trip a bit longer.

Hopefully I won't have any problems finding places to stay along the way.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Hello,

you could try to use Austrian Travel Network as a resource to book places along the way or in order to have a look at some more Biking and Cycling tours.

I have gone from Linz to Vienna once many years ago and I loved riding along river danube through the Wachau area. We stopped at some Heurigen along the way I remember. We were lucky that we had sunny weather. Right now it is rather hot in Austria, but the weather can change all of a sudden and it might start to rain.

We had all of our bags transported in a mini-van and that was great.

I am looking forward to reading your trip report!

Thank, Natalie. I've taken a look at Tiscover - nice site with loads of info. Though I was able to get good, specific information from the local tourist offices in Krimml and for Salzburgland. It is still a bit low season so they don't foresee any problems finding places to stay along the way.

Sounds nice. I'll be taking everything on my bike - but I'm a light packer.

Well, since I am melting here in Rome, I may as well go have some fun in Austria.

I leave on Saturday and it looks like the weather is changing next week - a bit cooler. let's hope so.

A friend just gave me a book: "La filosofia morale della bicicletta", Sabrina Morandi.

I'm taking it with me (nice and small).
