Anyone here done the drive from Baden-Baden heading due East throught he Schwarzwald to Weil der Stadt? If so, how was the drive and the condition of the roads? Are there gas stations along the small towns?

We never drove through the Black Forest itself, but the longer route around the forest, via Karlsruhe, is only about 60 miles, so I don't think you'd have to fill up again once you leave Baden-Baden. Certainly, larger places near by, such as Pforzheim to the north, would have lots of facilities, but I doubt you'd have problems in the smaller towns, even if you needed more fuel. We never found this an issue in Germany years ago, and a doubt it has become one since. After all, you won't exactly be out in the wilds, even if in the Schwarzwald.

thanks, yeah, I am quite surprised how populated the Black Forest is. Some of the forests I have driven through here in the US such as Gifford Pinchot in Mt. Rainier Natl. Park are total wilderness and very desolate.

Wanted to visit Triberg but unfortunately given my current route from Baden-Baden to Stuttgart and time limitations means I have to visit that part of the Schwarzwald on another trip. Thanks again for the reply!

There are no bad roads in Germany. Smile None. The Schwarzwald is no exception. No matter how small the road is, it will be in perfect condition.

How interesting that you are going to Weil der Stadt. We lived in Germany from April 2004 - December 2006 and lived down the road (two little towns over) from Weil der Stadt. It's a cute little town. There's a Johannes Kepler museum there. My son went to Johannes Kepler Schule(school) for the beginning of first grade. Smile

I think there might even be a Fasching/Fastnet/Fasnacht museum there as Weil der Stadt puts on a fabulous and amazing Fasching parade every year. Weil der Stadt is a "walled" town and very cool to explore on foot.

The roads connecting the towns are fine, and many are scenic. About 20 minutes (18.5 km) from Weil der Stadt, in the town of Holzbronn, is a GREAT little local German restaurant, Krabba Nescht, that we heard about from some of our neighbors. No American tourists here! Smile http://www.krabba-nescht.de/ There are walking trails all around the restaurant, so you can park, go for a little walk in the woods and then end the visit with some truly traditional "Schwabisch" (Swabian) food. They have a biergarten of course. This is just one of those places that you can go to and feel like you are off the beaten path and right smack in the middle of a German experience. When we went to Krabba Nescht we were definitely the only Americans there. Oh, and if you like whiskey/schnaps Krabba Nescht has a "brennerei" right on the property where you can get try and buy different schnaps.

Kerry, I love that website from the Restaurant. Their slogan is "eat here or we both will starve". Happy

Very cute! I bet they have some awesome local food!
