This sounds like a horrible experience and Paul is an experienced Slow Traveler - which just shows you that it can happen to anyone. This is my least favorite situation - to be in a vacation rental where there is no room for your things because the owner just moves out when people arrive. Okay for house trades, but not for vacation rentals where you expect it to be set up for you.
