We were going to go to Reims (Champagne!) for a weekend but instead it is going to be Mons in Belgium. The main scope of the weekend is to visit the Brasserie St. Fueillien for its marvelous beer. I won't go into the details of how this came about, champagne was fine for me. But I have never been to Belgium so fine.

Anyone been to Mons? What is there good to eat in Belgium?

Mons is absolutely fine! A nice spot, and not only because the new Paris to Moscow train stops there for merely one minute. It deserves more. Neat grande place, memorably good art gallery. What's good to eat? Moules et frites, cervelle d'agneau, and filét americain which is the most extravagently misnomer for any dish served up to unsuspecting travellers in Europe. Downside, well a few factories, but actually they're quite charming, and Mons is the Belgian headquarters of some military alliance (not sure which, NATO perhaps?) which seems to bring a few oddball types sporting braid and medals into town.
Enjoy Mons.
