Hello! We are planning on taking our two young children to Munich and Italy next summer. I will be taking them by myself from the US to Munich with my husband to follow 9 days later. We have family in Munich so we will stay with them to get the children acclimated to the time difference and for them to see their German relatives. I need any/all help on suggestions of inexpensive flight/train, etc...to get us from Munich to Rome. The flights I am finding are $700 USD each ticket! I am not adverse to using another airport if it makes the ticket reasonable. I believe the train ride is quite long - 11 hours-can anyone confirm this? Also, any thoughts, suggestions, etc...would be greatly appreciated!
If you don't mind taking a flight that goes via another airport (such as Vienna), you might be able to pick up a cheap flight with Air Berlin. Check out www.jetaboard.com
The train from Munich to Rome will take quite a long time and it won't be cheap.

We did a similar trip in 2004 when our son was 6. We flew from Seattle to Munich, drove through southern Germany to Garmisch, took a train to Innsbruck, took another train to Florence, drove through Tuscany to Rome, then flew back to Munich before we returned to Seattle. I would not advise this; all my arrangement were made before I found the slowtrav website. How old will your children be when you travel?
