I am flying on FF miles to Florence at the end of April with a 4 hour lay over in Zurich. In that amount of time is it possible to catch a glimpse of Zurich (which I have never been to?). Is the airport far from the city center? In that amount of time, considering I will probably be jet lagged what if anything would you suggest I do or see? Would hiring a driver to give me a tour be reasonable? If so any suggestions for such a service?
Thanks for your input.

We will be in Zurich in 1 1/2 weeks!! It is a short taxi ride into town or you can take a train from the airport. Maybe 15-20 minutes in a cab. Hiring a car service might be a good idea - should I ask at my hotel if they have one to recommend?

Zurich is a lovely town - a beautiful historic area along the river. The Bahnhofstrasse has all the big shops. The river goes to a large lake just past the downtown area. You can see the Alps in the distance.

One option would be to take a cab or the train into the center of town and just wander around. You will be tired and it might be nice to sit in a cafe or restaurant.

I can mail you my Zurich maps if you like (after I use them on this trip).

I have a few Zurich things on the site:
Shopping Notes
Restaurants
Types of Restaurants
Photos of Zurich

Thanks Pauline -that would be great on both counts-the hotel's recommendation for a driver/short tour that doesn't cost an arm and a leg and a map of Zurich. Have a wonderful time- I'll look forward to reading your Blog!

I just asked the same question over on the Italy forum, except that my layover is 5 hours in Zurich. I wonder how long before my flight out the authorities/airlines want me to get back to the Zurich airport? Pauline, I'll check out your pictures. Thanks.

Pauline -- for your files as a vegetarian:

>>>For vegetarians in Zurich: One of Europe's oldest vegetarian restaurants, the Hiltl (Sihlstraase 28) is right off the Bahnhofstrasse and enjoys cult status among vegetarians. Extensive menu offering Asian specialties, delicious salads and exotic fruit juices.>>>

After I wrote the earlier reply, I kept thinking "I have something for this in my files." Sure enough, this article...which I obviously carefully put in the date for but failed to put in the source!

Layover in Zürich
Dateline: 08/23/99

Zürich Airport is a major European gateway, and many travelers change planes in Zürich on multi-segment intercontintal flights. I often receive e-mails from readers who ask, "What can I do in Zürich during a four- or five-hour layover?" Here's my answer, which you can print out and carry along the next time a change of planes leaves you with time to kill in Zürich.

See how much time you have.
***If you have four hours between flights, you should have plenty of time for a trip into the city.*** The train trip takes only 10 minutes, but you might have to wait 10 or 15 minutes for a train in each direction. For safety's sake, allow 1-1/4 hours for the roundtrip, plus enough time for security and boarding (and for check-in, if you don't already have a boarding pass for your next flight).

TIP: If you're short on time, skip a city excursion and catch a local train to nearby Oerlikon (see map), a Zürich suburb where you can have a snack, visit the shops, or walk around and see how the Swiss live before returning to the airport.

Take a train.
In Zürich Airport, take the escalators downstairs to the underground railway station. There, you can buy a roundtrip ticket to Zürich Hauptbahnhof (the main railway station) and catch a train into town.

Walk up the Bahnhofstrasse.
The Bahnhofstrasse is Zürich's answer to Fifth Avenue and Wall Street combined. It's lined with upscale stores, banks, tearooms, and investment firms. You'll find many other shops, restaurants, and department stores in the streets on either side. (The twisty streets to the left of the Bahnhofstrasse are fun to explore when you aren't in a hurry.)

To reach the Bahhofstrasse, take the escalator to the railroad station's underground shopping mall (ShopVille) and come up the Bahnhofstrasse escalator on the other side of the Bahnhofplatz. The Bahnhofstrasse lies straight ahead. Walk all the way to Bürkliplatz at the far end for a view of Lake Zürich. During the warmer months, you can rent a paddleboat or go for an excursion on a lake steamer.

When you're ready to return...
Catch a tram back to the railroad station via the Bahnhofstrasse.
Or, if you have a little more time, cross the bridge across the River Limmat to Bellevueplatz. Turn left and follow the left bank of the Limmat on foot or by tram until you reach the Bahnhofbrücke ("Railway Station Bridge"), stopping at the Grossmünster church along the way. Then turn left and walk across the bridge to the main railway station, where you can catch the next train to the airport.

Another option is to cut inland at Bellevueplatz and take the Rämistrasse uphill to Oberdorfstrasses, then turn left and wowork your way through the Old Town until find yourself back at the river next to the Bahnhofbrücke.

Last year I too had a 4 hour layover in Zurich. We took the train into and from town. 1 1/4 hours is about right for the round trip travel time. If you plan on spending any money, you'll need to use an ATM (as I did in the airport) because Switzerland does not use the Euro. When we arrived in Zurich we walked the Bahnhofstrasse, had a hot chocolate in a cafe, snapped some photos, bought a bit more chocolate and then returned to the airport (spending a total of about 1.5 hours in town). We probably would have had time for lunch, but were nervous about missing our connecting flight. If you want them to stamp your passport, you might need to ask them...like I did.
