My sister and I will be traveling from Venice back to England in November, 2003, and we want to spend two nights in Switzerland. Well, actually, we would like to spend more time there than just two days, but this is all we can manage. Anyway, does anyone have a suggestion for which city to go to? Lucerne? Zurich? We are coming by train, so I guess it would have to be on the train route, and we want to stay someplace really nice. We do want to walk around and absorb the atmosphere, see sights, etc. This will be the last part of our journey, and I know we will want to savor each moment. We will have just a week more in England then home. Any help would be appreciated. Dale Maureen Stoll ,

I have been told that many of the mountain town businesses close in November - too late for hiking, too early for skiing. But I might be wrong. Have a look at a few of the town web sites to see if they mention when skiing starts, because it might be fun to have two nights in a place like Grindelwald during ski season. http://www.grindelwald.ch/defaulte.htm
Another option might be inbetween a larger town and a mountain town - Interlaken. It is between two lakes and surrounded by mountains. http://www.interlaken.ch/
You could also consider the towns in the French area, more to the west - Geneva, Lausanne, etc. Any of these places would be good. Have a look at the train routes and see which will work best travel-wise.
Not much of an answer, I know, but really there are many nice places in Switzerland to spend a couple of nights.
I recommend Lucerne, a charming and easy-to-get around town. If you want a nice hotel, I recommend the Wilden Mann. See www.wilden-mann.ch
Would also highly recommend a private tour with a guide...you learn so many wonderful things! I have the name and contact info for a fine guide at my office, so email me there (sally@century-tvl.com) if you're interested in having the information.
