We will be in Switzerland at the end of summer (2008). I have found a vacation rental in the Berner Oberland area and am now trying to decide which resort or small town for Central Switzerland. I like the location of Weggis, but Engelberg has many more rentals in my price range. I would like to be close enough to Lucerne so we can take the train and make our flight out of the country at noon.
Any ideas if we would be able to get from Engelberg to Zurich by 11:00 am? Or ideas for other towns that would be good as a home base a little closer to Lucerne?
Thanks, Kathryn

Hi Kathryn,

We took the train from Lucerne to Engelberg a couple of years ago and spent a night in Engelberg before beginning a two week hike in the Swiss Alps. It's a lovely place, though Weggis has the advantage of also being on the lake.

Check www.sbb.ch to get an idea of train schedules. It looks like trains between Englelberg and Lucerne run every hour (beginning very early) and you'd have a short time then to connect to the hourly train to Zurich and the airport. The whole process would take about 2-1/2 hours to get you to the Zurich "flughafen."
