What kind of money would you send with a 16 year old to Prague? What denominations of Korunas?
He only needs to cover lunch and small incidentals for a couple of days. He has an ATM card, but the chaperone (this is a HS orchestra) has requested that the kids not plan on using them much if at all.
Hi Cynthia, ATM is really the way to go since you don't know how much your son will need. Get too many Koruna and you may be stuck with them. Ensure that his card is accessible overseas. Airports have ATMs where he can access money on arrival. The exchange rate is better that way, and generally no hidden fees (dependant on his bank.)
If you have Euro on hand,(in case he may be travelling via another European country) they will also be accepted in Czech Republic and change given back in Koruna. I'm talking shops etc. not money changers. E.g. Go into a Cafe and ask if they will accept Euro for purchases.
My experience has always been positive and have never worried about Koruna. Remember that their currency will eventually change to Euro, so they are preparing now.

This may sound strange, but if you don't mind my asking when your son will be in Prague? We'll be taking our 17 yr old daughter there May 25-28 and she really loves to run into groups from the US during our travels. This is our first trip to Prague and she's afraid there won't be any US kids there, which I've told her she's probably wrong. We're also going to Munich when we leave Prague.
