Just back from our second trip in the past 3 years to Italy and Croatia. This time we hit Bosnia-Hercegovina as well.
I don't understand why more people do not combine Italy with Croatia. It is quite convenient and not terribly expensive to take the overnight ferries from Ancona, Pescara, and Bari over to various destinations on the Croatian coast. It also feels ~adventurous.
The water of the Dalmatian Coast is crystal, crystal, clear. Most of the people can speak at least some english. It's much less expensive than Italy and the scenery is spectacular. Diocletian's Palace in Split, Dubrovnik, Krka, Hvar, all amazing places. We highly recommend visiting Mostar in the BiH as well. Very friendly people, Turkish markets, beautiful mountains, mosques,.........

Well, Steve, how about writing a trip report to share details of your travels with us? The most popular section of SlowTrav.com is Trip Reports, and they come up high in Google searches. If someone were interested in Croatia, your report might convince them to visit!
I'm working on the trip report but it's going to take awhile. I was too excited about the trip not to post perchance someone out there was contemplating a similar trip.
I've read a couple of trip reports and vacation rental reviews for Croatia. It's definitely hit the radar now but probably still at least five years off.
Not sure we'll return to Croatia next year or not - but I'm interested in learning more about your sidetrip to Mostar.
The sum total of our time in Bosnia was about 30 minutes as we traveled from Dubrovnik to Šibenik. We stopped for coffee as we drove through that thin strip of BiH (near Neum) that bisects Croatia in two. Next time we're in that part of the world I'd love to drive inland a bit and a trip to Mostar would fill that bill nicely.
