Mom and I have one night in the north where we do not have a reservation. We are driving from Vilalba to Cervera de Pisuerga. We have decided to shoot up to the Northern coast of Asturias and go along there until we reach Hwys. 621/184/627 which go down to Cervera.

My questions are: will it be tough to find a place to stay without a reservation on the coast in late September? And, has anyone taken the route above down through the Picos? I am sure it is a beautiful drive, but it might take a gazillion years to get to Cervera de Pisuerga on it. We could also take a more major highway and backtrack.

Any advice will be appreciated.

I don't know that specific area ( Frown) but I'm pretty sure that you will not have problems finding accommodation without a reservation at the end of September.

This is what I have heard repeated as well.We will be in Northern Spain during that time and October) so I have been reading and "talking" with others online.

The fordors travel forum site (in the Spanish section) have some very knowledgeable people ( some who live there or visit often) about nothern Spain who might be able to answer you specifically. Its one of the best spots I have found for Northern Spain info.

Hola Shannon and Shannon’s mum

We travelled those roads a few years ago and from a naturalists/stunning scenery point of view don’t miss the road from Cangas de Onis to Riaño to Cervera de Pisguera

So this is how we’d do it....

From villalba head north east to the coast past Mondoñedo towards Ribadeo

Then the coast road towards Aviles and Gijon

For speed you could go south then to Oviedo but before Oviedo go east towards Ribadasella. (If you have the time then stay on the coast road to Ribadasella)

Ribadesella is on the coast and not far south is Cangas de Onis. Find a place to stay around here for the night. Coast or inland doesn’t matter whatever you prefer.

Next morning go from Cangas de Onis to Riaño

Riaño to Guardo

Guardo to Cervera de Pisguera

You would have plenty of time to detour from Cangas de Onis to Covadonga as well then backtrack to the Riaño road...

A question from us.....Where exactly is Hwys????

Clive and Sue...

Thanks... this is perfect. Clive we will definitely take the route you suggest and we will give you a full report when we see you on October 1. I have printed out your notes and they are going in my Spain folder... if you think of anything we must do in Galicia or La Rioja let me know!

I promise not to shorten any more words. WT I agree with you about Fodors, there is some good info about Spain over there. Maybe our paths will cross in September. Big Grin
