Hi all,

We'll be going to Brugges at the end of July to finish off our holiday, which will be purely a gastronomic destination. My question to you lovely people: any suggestions on good places to eat in Brugges (or even Ghent)? Good places to get some of the famous Belgian golden drops would be greatly appreciated as well!

Thanks!

We visited the specialty beerhouse - 't Brugs Beertje. It has an extremely large menu of beer by the bottle along with a few on tap. It was a cozy room and a great place to go if there is a specific Belgium beer that you want to try. There are many bars lining the main Markt square. The brewery is also popular place to visit.

I don't have any specific restaurants since it has been a while since I last visited Brugge. It is a great place to visit. Here are travel notes on Brugge from our Slow Travel website.

Oh yeah, don't forget the chocolates. Leonidas are great and available at many locations throughout Belgium.

At a loss for superlatives, we feasted (in no particular order) on fabulous mussels, fantastic fries, formidable beer, and fine fine fine chocolate for three wonderful days in Bruges.

I was going to respond with one word - mussels, but Kendal beat me to it. I second everything said in the above post. It's the essence of Brugge (moules frites). Just head for the Huidenvettersplein.

Excellent! So looks like the thing to consume list will be:

Mussels: check!
Beer: check!
Chocolate: check!
Fries: check!
Beer: check! (We;;, I had to make sure... Blushing)

Thanks for the tip on the beerhouse Marta. That sounds exactly what I was hoping to find in Brugges.

AppalAnnie: is the Huidenvettersplein an area that specialises in mussels, or is it a restaurant?

Thanks everyone!
3 weeks and counting...

Neither, actually. It is described as a "charming town square lined with restaurants." However it may or may not be the one on which the restaurant/cafe where we ate mussels was located. It's been a long time. You can check it out here. I just found it on the web, and it looked like the place where we were.

If you are there on a Wednesday morning to early afternoon, do not miss the market in the Markt square. There are a couple of trucks selling hot food.

Also Le Pain Quotidien, Philipstockstraat 21, is a great cafe/bakery serving breakfast and lunch. See our favorite dessert -

I wouldn't eat in any of the restaurants on the Markt square unless your main purpose is people watching.

Our favorite chocolatier is Depla on Marianstraat, not too far from the Church of our Lady (where Michelangelo's Madonna & Child).

Happy Happy

mm.. looks good JustTravel. Fortunately/unfortunately we will be there Wednesday.
Unfortunately, because I saw on the Brugs Beertje site that they are closed Tuesday and Wednesday, so that means I will have to try tasting as many of the beers as I can over 2 nights instead of 4 (which is a dangerous proposition!)

There are many other pubs for beer in Brugge. I'll look through some of my notes to see if I can find a good site.

I also enjoyed waffles. I know it sounds kinda kitchy but they were great.
