If this is an initial visit to Berlin, you might want to choose another part of the city than Kreuzberg.
Maybe Charlottenberg or Mitte.
Go to Kreuzberg only if you are very familiar with Berlin and understand the nature of the district. Kreuzberg has its positive sides, its multicultural mix is certainly one of them, but it is also considered one of the most difficult districts in the city.
"Go to Kreuzberg only if you are very familiar with Berlin and understand the nature of the district. Kreuzberg has its positive sides, its multicultural mix is certainly one of them, but it is also considered one of the most difficult districts in the city." Difficult in what sense?
Chronic unemployment, and the cycle of poverty which that leads to have plagued Kreuzberg for years. In a city which suffers from very high unemployment, Kreuzberg suffers more than the rest of the city. There are huge problems in the school system, which the district has tried and continues to try to solve, having to do with cultural differences (the majority of Kreuzberg is made up of Turkish immigrants with varying degrees of language skills and cultural integration). There are crime and drug problems in this part of the city, but that is just a side effect of the very deep rooted social problems which Kreuzberg contends with. Poor socioeconomic conditions, combined with a immigrant and chronic unemployment problems, make Kreuzberg an interesting social study, but not necessarily an area where a person might want to spend a vacation in Berlin.
Me too Corinna!! One of my very favorite cities in the world -- creative, still affordable, growing, developing, incredible history, fabulous architecture both new and old.
I even told my husband-- ok, if we ever have to go back to live in Germany ---then, please, BERLIN!!
