It was fabulous. I went from Krimml (160 km SW of Salzburg) to Passau, Germany and then from Passau almost to Vienna. I stopped about 35 km short. I was dead tired and it was raining so I took the train for the last leg.

I had a wonderful time. I saw some beautiful towns as well as some natural wonders. I had been to Salzburg and Vienna before, but never visited the countryside.

I’m not sure exactly how many kilometers I rode in the end; my rental bikes had no odometer. Judging from the maps it was something around 650 km.

It was relatively easy riding (Pauline: I was not in the Alps, but along rivers) with just a few short climbs. I am not used to riding with panniers and that took some getting used to. It was like have another person on the back of the bike.

It is such orderly country. There is really never anything out of place or in disrepair. This was a good time of year to admire the window boxes overflowing with flowers on just about every house.

I’ll write up a short trip report soon. I didn’t take very good notes. I was always so tired at the end of the day and just felt like lounging in a cafe (which is what I did).

Coming back to Rome was definitely culture shock. I need to find an apartment exchange with someone in Austria and go spend a summer there!

And this was by far the most dangerous obstacle in my path:

I love the 'obstacle' picture. That is so cool. I never think about doing a bike trip in Austria because of the mountains but along the rivers would be great. I'll have to tell my 'biker' friends.

Welcome Back!

Welcome back Steph!! Did you do the trip on your own or was Cesare with you? Along the rivers sounds perfect and the road in that photo looks perfect! Switzerland is also a great place in the summer - and you can find very nice vacation rentals that are inexpensive. Maybe you can join us in Gstaad this September!!!!

I was on my own. Cesare was at a conference in Sweden. He is not big on cycling. He'll go with me for the day but that's it. So I took this opportunity to go while he was away.

In fact I chose Austria because as a woman alone, I knew I would have no trouble. I've had unpleasant experiences cycling alone in Italy.

Gstaad in September? Hmmm. I'll give this some serious thought.

What did you do in evening? Did you eat in restaurants on your own? I have no problem doing this in a city, but out in the country I think I might feel a bit odd.

I will email you details about Gstaad!!

Beebee - I did eat in restaurants. I was pedaling through the country but always stayed in small but relatively touristy towns (I mean that in a good sense - lots of cafes and restaurants).

I did feel uncomfortable at times, but usually struck up a conversation with the people at the next table or the waitstaff. Consider that there were a lot of Germans and Austrians doing more of less the same trip as I, so we would always talk about the day's travels.

There was also the time in Brannau when the waiter came up and said, "allora signora cosa prende". He was surprised when I responed in Italian ;-)

I ate dinner one night with a German couple I met on the road and another night with an Italian couple I met. We had spent the day cycling together and plan to get together here.

So I was alone, but it wasn't so bad. I would have prefered to do this with others but simply don't know any cyclists here. My friends all think I'm nuts! Cesare seems to be a bit more curious about cycling now, so maybe I can convince him to go next time.

Pauline - I only booked ahead in Salzburg, and that was just a phone call to the tourist office the morning of the same day. I tried to arrive at my destination by 4:30 or 5 each day to make it to the tourist office before they closed for a list of hotels. When they were closed, there was always a list and town map available just outside the door.

This was not high season so I never had problems finding a place to stay. I stayed in little pensions and hotels, very nicely decorated, right in the center, sometimes with sat tv and a chocolate on the pillow for 25-40 Euro, including breakfast.

Wonderful trip, great photos, Steph.
I've been eating in restaurants alone all over the world for years and I always like the chance to meet others or just savor the food and memories of the day.
It's a better choice when you don't have company than not going at all, don't you think?

Steph--I commend you for doing the trip by yourself. That's better by far than not doing it and it sounds like you had a great time.

Did you pedal through any spa towns? I'm looking for a good candidate to spend some R&R time in the first two weeks of November.
