I've been asked by a friend for recommendations for a good map for Amsterdam and Brussels. I am thinking of something like a map atlas similar to the London A-Z, assuming something like that exists.
What are your recommendations?

Thanks
Bill

My recommendation is first and foremost that the maps be laminate or waterproof in some way. I had to buy a laminated map in Amsterdam after my paper fold-out map fell apart in the constant rain.

Neither Amsterdam or Brussels is as complicated as London in terms of tiny winding streets. If your friends are tourists, I would think they could get by in both cities with standard tourist maps and guide books. If they will be doing business or visiting homes, I would recommend they wait until they arrive in both cities and look at maps first hand in bookstores (which abound) or at the airport/train stations. They can see which ones they prefer in terms of size, detail, etc.

I very often wait until I arrive in a city to buy a map at the airport or train kiosk.

I agree with Italiasoon. Amsterdam and Brussels are both compact cities and the typical tourist maps do cover a lot of what you will need. Streetwise has versions for both of the cities. Your friend may want to visit a bookstore and look at the styles of the major map publishers (Streetwise, Lonely Planet, DK Pocket Map) to see one they like the best and then get the versions published for the cities. As I get older, I have a harder time reading the small print on the maps so I usually look at a couple of them to see if which ones are the easiest for me to read.

Thanks Marta and Italiasoon

I agree with you about the touirist map of Amsterdam. It's what I have used the couple of times I've been there. I haven't been to Brussels, though.

My friend particularly wanted something ahead of time and didn't seem to be interested in using viaMichelin or GoogleEarth for his planning purposes.

We gave him some suggestions and I haven't heard more from him so I guess he is satisfied.

Thanks again

Bill
