My husband and I will be in these cities during the last two weeks in July. Any suggestions about "what not to miss" will be greatly appreciated.

I've read that Budapest currently has the largest Jewish population in Europe since the Holocaust. There are probably some nice synagogues.

I'll be watching for the replies to this query, also.

You could use the Search function available at the top of this page, just about where your member name appears. Click on the word "Find". A small window will appear. If you type "Budapest" in that window and then click on "Go", you will have access to about 10 pages of links to previous discussions in which Budapest is mentioned.

You can go on and do the same with Vienna and Prague, of course.

Do not hesitate to ask if you have any specific questions; the more defined the questions, the better the answers. Much depends on what you and your husband are interested in.

I am also sure our members who know these cities will pick up on this topic and help.

And check some good guide books as well.

Only in Eastern Europe. Paris has the largest Jewish population in Europe.

While, apparently, there are about 26 synagogues in Budapest, the one really worth seeing is the Dohány St. Synagogue, the largest one in the world after Temple Emanu-El in NYC. Its restoration in recent years was funded largely by Tony Curtis and Estée Lauder. (Unfortunately, I could only see it from the outside when I was there in 1994, as they were working inside. I'll have to go back, I guess.)

Hi phylmokap, I have not been to Budapest and only been to Vienna briefly with a group tour years ago so can't really comment there. But as Doru mentioned using the Find feature will get you some great threads with lots of information about them.

I was in Prague in 2006 and loved it! Here's a discussion that another Slow Traveler started, which I think will give you some great ideas to start with. PRAGUE

Hi- In Vienna, I would recommend going out to the outskirts of Vienna to go to a Heuriger- In Grinzing there are several. It was very pleasant sitting outside and the food and wine were wonderful. We took one of the trams outto one in Nussdorf and it was great! Others have talked about Grinzing. For Grinzing, you are supposed to be able to take tram 38 from the ring to Grinzing or tram D to where it ends for Nussdorf.
In Prague, don't miss the castle and cathedral there. And of course the Old Town area and Charles Bridge.
