Are there any areas of Prague to avoid from a safety point of view. Thinking where to pick the hotel and if any areas to avoid at night.

Hi Delina, I spent five days in Prague as a female solo traveler and I have to say that I felt very safe the entire time. My hotel was in what is considered the Old Town part of the city and I walked everywhere. I did not take the metro other than to get to the train station to buy my ticket to my next destination so I can't speak from that perspective.

My main hangout was walking along the Charles Bridge and the route heading towards old town square so there was always people around and I felt very safe. My hotel was off a small side street and even walking back late at night when there was less foot traffic, I still felt pretty safe.

As always, I still try to not let my guard cmpletely down and I make myself aware of my surroundings.

Although I did not experience any problems I think the only thing you may want to be careful with is securing your purse/wallet and other valuables as you go about your sightseeing. But I think this goes for other cities too.

Have a wonderful trip!

Our B&B hostess warned us of pickpockets when we first arrived and there are warning signs on metro cars.

My husband did have a pickpocket unbutton the chest pocket on his sport shirt (using a newspaper as a screen) on our first crowded morning metro ride. Nothing lost, as he pushed the hand away immediately and everything of value was in a money belt under his clothes. The guy quickly moved across the crowded car out of sight.

We met a woman at the American Embassy who'd had her wallet stolen the day before and had no idea when/where it had happened.

The metro otherwise seemed very safe to us at all hours of the day and evening. I believe they close down at some point at night, replaced by special 'night buses', but we never stayed out late enough to investigate!

Thankyou.

I've seen the thread over at TA too which was also helpful.

In the city where I live you need to be on your guard for pick pockets - as with all cities I guess, so I figure I should be fine. Common sense really.

Having never been to Prague I just wanted to make sure.
