Next weekend, my family (husband and two young teens) are flying directly into Frankfurt International where we have a three hour layover before we head for Swiss and Italian skiing. My kids would love to make a short trip outside the airport to get a nano-taste of Germany. Any recommendations about very nearby atractions or restaurants -- anything? We can hang in the airline's club, but would prefer getting some fresh air and local flavor.

Thank you in advance for any recommendations you might have.

Hi there. I personally would not try to leave the airport with only a three hour layover. Frankfurt, although a nice airport, can be tricky for first timers. Arriving international and then transferring to hop onto another flight within Europe can be a long walk. Plus, you have to go through passport control, etc.

Good luck and have a nice trip.

I agree with jnini.... with only a three hour layover, definitely don't leave the airport!

I have only passed through the Frankfurt Airport a couple times, but it is a big and very busy place with lots of national and international connections. It is not far from the center of Frankfurt; a taxi ride would take 20-30 minutes each way.

Perhaps you can get more of a taste of Germany though than just the airline club. Here's a link to the Frankfurt Airport website's information on shops and restaurants in the airport. Maybe you can pursue a more leisurely sit-down German meal(stay away from McDonalds) and do some shopping.

Another alternative would be to step out to one of the airport hotels where you might get a better meal and the fresh air you are looking for. Be sure to allow yourself plenty of time to come back through security though!

DO NOT LEAVE THE AIRPORT REPEAT DO NOT LEAVE THE AIRPORT.

This would be a huge mistake, as the two lovely ladies before me have stated. There is nothing, nothing, nothing that you can see which should take you out of Germany's busiest airport for such a short amount of time.

There are tons of shopping possibilities at the airport. Security is tight at this maze of an airport. You will need time just getting where you need to be to make your connection.

I lived in Germany for many years and have flown in and out of Frankfurt many, many times. Please trust me on this one. Uh-uh No!

Nothing new to add to the impassioned cries of DON'T LEAVE THE AIRPORT ... but to add my 2 bits worth, 3 hours at Frankfurt Airport just about guarantees you'll get on your flight. I have a friend who swears that the airport prides itself on ways to make you miss flights. My brother and SIL just got back from Italy via Frankfurt and get this -- their flight was late, and then they got stuck in an airport elevator !!!! They missed the flight of course.

We just passed through Frankfurt airport enroute from Rome to Atlanta. They take their security seriously! From one flight to another we passed through 3 intense security stations. Luckily there were many on our flight trying to make this connection- so they held the flight.(power in numbers)
3 hours will allow you time to browse the postcard selection and have a german bier- close enough to a tour of the city!
enjoy! sandi
