Anyone ever been to Budapest in mid August? We were thinking of going for a week around my birthday, August 20, but afraid it may be really hot or really crowded. Anyone know?

Hi Deb,

I spent July 2001 in Budapest - and left on August 1. But, I can tell you it was not extraordinarily hot - definitely not like it was in Italy just before and after I was in Budapest.

As for crowds, I believe many of the locals head to Lake Balaton or other places in August, so the city might be quite empty.

We were in Budapest July 2006 and it was unbearably hot, humid and no breeze.

But then again, I wouldn't turn down the chance of returning either.

I was in Budapest in summer a lot of times, and I found always different weathers: hot, but also cold weather ...once 2 years ago it was really cold (could be 10 degrees) ...the temperature here in Europe is changing: in the last 2 years we have had very good Marches Aprils, while in August and September the weather was not very good: colder than usual and quite often it rains.
Ciao,

Anyway I don't want to let you change destination: Budapest is a very good choice for your holiday. if you need some advices on restaurants and places to visit, please ask.

I went to Budapest last July for 3 days as a side trip from my home exchange apartment in Vienna. I loved it!

Try and book ahead for some concert tickets at the new concert hall. Tickets are much cheaper in Budapest than Western Europe or the US. We also got a chance to see the "Elisabeth" musical in Hungarian (with English surtitles). It is based on the life story of Empress Elisabeth (Franz Joseph's strange wife). Really spectacular show!
