We have a plane delay and are going to be arriving very late in Munich, with children, so would like to stay quite close to the airport. We will then have one full day and another night before we take our flight out of Munich. I am not one for airports/or stuffy hotel rooms, but because we are arriving late, it does make sence to stay fairly close.

Out of the hotels that are within a 15 - 20 min radius of the airport - who can suggest something a little more like home away from home? Any recommendations will be greatful. We will then get the best of both worlds - convenient after landing with a bit of a traditional German touch?

Well, not perhaps the sort of place I'd choose for a week's holiday, but you might try the Corbin Hotel in Friesing. These is easily reached by a local bus from the airport (Route 635). Expect to pay about €130 for a double including a very good breakfast buffet on weekdays, but less than €100 on Fri, Sat & Sun nights. A quirky but pleasant and colourful place run by owners who are very keen on Feng Shui. More on http://www.corbin-hotel.de/. It's certainly a refreshing change from the mainstream international chain hotels.
I hope this helps.

Hotel Daniel's in Hallbergmoos (a small town near the airport) is very nice.
You can walk to the stores and see a piece of small town Germany.
The taxi costs about 15 euros.
The breakfast is great.
There are several apartments in an additional building which are quite comfortable with TV, internet access & kitchen.
