Hi,
my wife and I are planning a trip to Iceland for the next Summer.
We are just wondering if:
- it would be completely insane to think about camping
- it would be reasonably acceptable to spend two weeks in that country

Any advice?

Hello Valeam -

If you like horses, you might want to consider a guided 6-8 day riding tour in the highlands of southern Iceland. I stayed briefly at Hekluhestar some years ago and would have loved to stay long enough for that. The people were wonderful as were the horses (I hadn't ridden for decades) and the food; communication was no problem, and the landscape unforgettable.

Hekluhestar is a horse and sheep farm at the foot of the volcano Hekla with a nearby, turf-roofed "guesthouse" which might be of interest even if you aren't a horse person. You can either cook your own meals at the guesthouse or sign up for full board. After the delicious samples I tasted I wouldn't dream of the former, though.

Thank you Doru for the warm welcome! I found Italy Forum quite interesting and I'll get involved for sure.

Speaking of Dorothyk advice, I am not an horse rider at all. Nonetheless your description is so tempting that... I'll give it a try.
But what about using a tent in the Iceland Summer?
Would you advice it or not?

We are quite experienced campers (Norway, Denmark, Scotland, Ireland), and not easily frightened by severe weather conditions, but anyway we don't have a clue about how much "severe" the weather would be in Iceland.
Confused
Edited to correct name.

Ehm, I am awfully sorry for the incorrectly spelled name!
I am moving my first steps and I am notorious for my mistypes even in my mother tongue.
Sorry, and thank you again. "Caffè pagato" the next time you'll visit Rome!
Wink
Have a nice Monday

Valeam - Those horses ("ponies," they call them, a special rugged breed) were real sweeties. Mine took a lot of grief from me as I had been invited to help round up the sheep for the winter in spite of my inexperience, but she somehow maintained both her gentleness and her independence. She knew exactly what to do, anyway, and seemed to enjoy every moment of the round-up. Happy There are a few pictures here.

I'm sure the people at Hekluhestar would welcome your questions and give you excellent advice. The wife is French, and the children (not really children anymore, but still there I see) are fluent in English.

Hi again!
It was a very very busy Monday at work and I am really looking forward to the complete silence of an Artic country.

Thank you Ágústa for your links, I’ll do my homework and come back soon with a lot of questions, for sure!

Unfortunately I am forced to take my vacation in August, since Italy shuts down in that month and consequently my business zeroes.
I am not particularly afraid of cold weather, I am rather worried about the persistence of it. For example if you go to Scotland you can trust its moody weather: often changing by the hour. So you can get completely sogged in a thunderstorm and still have a chance of a ray of Sun.
On the contrary German weather is often stable as a life sentence: you can freeze or burn till death.
I hope Iceland will resemble more to Scotland in this aspect.

No offense to Iceland lovers, but I think I would get rather bored being in Iceland for two weeks unless I was taking boat trips to islands or something.

How about camping in Belgium? Big Grin

Maybe another time. I love France and Belgium is one of the few countries in Europe that I missed.
Presently I prefer the quiet and calm Iceland since I live in the centre of Rome. Under my windows there are 4 pizzerie and a Disco. I don't know why (since I think ordinary people have work and get up early in the morning), but every night there is a huge crowd hanging out there, voicing and sometimes fighting to enter in the disco.
So leave me my beloved Iceland...
