Hi all,

We're going to be staying in La Begude de Mazenc from June 15-27. Actually, Liz (aka BW) will only be there for the first week - so June 15-20 would be better for the both of us - but I'm always available Smile.

I don't know much about the area, but am more than willing to drive to meet other Slow Travellers. How about Nyons? Vaison-la-Romaine? Orange?

Maybe even lunch farther south in more familiar territory - Bonnieux, Lourmarin, Ansouis, or Maison Gouin in Coustellet?

Or even over in the Ardeche or somewhere along the Rhone, if anybody is going to be there.

Depending on the date, there may be up to six Canadians available for a GTG.

Let's make it happen!

Hi Pamie Jo,

GREAT to get a response!!!

Where will you be based? We are a bit to the north of the popular Luberon area this time, but willing to travel a reasonable distance.

How about lunch on Monday June 17? It would likely be the best date for us.

We are doing an Untour and based in Isle Sur Sorgue. I looked on the map and the Dentelles area looks like it might be good half way meeting place. You are familiar with the area, so you pick the spot. Monday is the 16th and Tuesday is the 17th, which day did you mean?

Hi Pamie Jo

I meant Monday the 16th - guess I was looking at the wrong month on the calendar.

I'll get back later with location options.

I'd meet! But we'll be there later...June 26-July 5. Anyone there that late? We'll be in France for 6 weeks, so maybe we'll run into fellow ST'ers somewhere!

Doug, if you meet in Vaison, some friends who just returned gave high reviews of Le Moulin a Huile www.moulin-huile.com. They even stayed at Bastide de Moustieres (Alain Ducasse's place) and said Moulin was their best meal of the entire trip!

Pamie Jo Vaison-la-Romaine would be a great spot to meet. I've been to Vaison once for part of a rainy afternoon - is high on my list for a return visit. Laura's restaurant suggestion is a bit out of our price range for lunch.

I've been trying to come up with other options in/around Vaison - nothing yet. There are a lot of tourist cafes in the lower village. We COULD meet on the Roman Bridge & go from there.

I'll keep looking - but there is another twist. A lot of restaurants are closed on Monday.

Laura Thanks for the suggestion - other reviews indicate that it's an excellent choice - but a bit pricey for us for lunch.

Doug,

Do you know if it will be a market day? Vaison's market is fabulous. You could shop for picnic supplies and eat on the old bridge or along the river.

Additionally, for anyone who arrives early, head to the bakery on the Place. The "place" is forgive me for saying so, but it is rather ugly, actually, and a carpark most days of the week now. It truly is a square, so if you're in the modern-looking Place (by the post office) walk up and over to the old place. The bakery is phenomenal and a local favorite. It also has seating in or out with good coffe, and the monumental oven in the basement is viewable from the bakery - towards the bathrooms- you can watch the patissier at work!

Another lunch idea, is up in the old town on the hill, below the chateau. It's a great photo op area and pretty looking down into Vaison. I cannot remember the name, maybe someone here will know. But before you walk up the hill you can see the terrace from below. We had lunch at a restaurant attached to a hotel, in the garden terrace. Delicious salads, etc. It was hot and the place had a nice breeze and view. I think it was moderately priced, maybe 13 euro for the salads...

Hi Laura,

Market day is Tuesday. I've heard excellent reports of the market - plan to visit the next day or the following Tuesday.

I know the "Place" in Vaison is not ideal - that's why I didn't suggest meeting there.

Do either of these restaurants sound familiar? - Le Bateleur, Bistro du'O

Both are on the other side of the bridge.

Doug, I think it's the Beffroi www.le-beffroi.com Though the round fountain is outside in the old city...we ordered a la carte, as we all wanted a salad.

But check out the bakery, it's fantastique!

Doug,
Sorry to be so slow to respond. I am in the process of finishing up the school year and have been very distracted. YES! I still want to get together in Vaison-la-Romaine. I have it marked on our map and it sounds like a great place to meet. You will have to be specific about where to meet though, since we are newbies. We love the small cafe's and are not looking for fancy-schmancy. Look forward to visiting with fellow slow-travelers.

Hi Pamie Jo,

How about we meet in the middle of the Roman Bridge at noon on Monday June 16? Directions aren't necessary - you can't miss it.

I'll try to scout out a location either on Sunday or on Monday morning. We may end up on the Place - but the company & conversation should more than compensate for any other shortcomings.
