My friend Jean sends her apologies, but she's unable to come due to a last-minute family obligation. I'll be there, though, used books and all. See you all then!

OK - everyone ready for the GTG next Sunday?

First, it isn't too late to join us - if you stumble on this post and would like to come, we'd love to see you there.

WHERE - Oakland's Redwood Regional Park, Skyline Boulevard, Oakland, CA 1 mile north of Skyline's intersection with Joaquin Miller Road. You can find a map HERE

We have reserved the Roberts Grove picnic site, near the entrance kiosk, to the left (west) of the parking area. The PDF map doesn't include the site, but it is near the Madrone and Huckleberry areas.

WHAT TIME? Jon & Doris will be there by about 10 am (thanks again, guys) to claim our area; we will plan on starting the party by noon, and eating about 1 pm. Then it's open until the rangers ask us politely to leave.

BRING: food and drink to share - this will be a true potluck. Colleen is graciously providing tableware, plates and glasses.

There are three or four picnic tables in our area - you may want to bring along a picnic tablecloth (we were short last year) and alawn chair or two. Also, for those of you from the interior valleys - it can get chilly in the redwoods when the fog starts to creep across the bay, so don't forget a coat or sweater.

NOTE: There is a $5.00 per car parking charge. If you need a ride or are willing to bring someone, let us know.

There is also a swimming pool at the park - $3. adults, $2.00 for kids and seniors 62+. Bring suit & towel if you are interested in swimming.

And don't forget your books for the travel book exchange.

See you all on Sunday the 29th.

Judy

Judy,

We may actually be 3 of us; our son Karl said he may joining us after I told him that your e-mail id was berkely.edu :-). (he is a undergrad Berkley alumni and grad student at Berkeley)

We too look forward to putting faces to all these names. Eden I am not sure that I will be able to take you up on your invitation to drop in on your picnic first but I will be in touch...

Letha, Oscar and now Karl

Thanks for the map of the park. It really helps. However, the Park's website wants you to take public transit and neither mapquest nor googlemaps seems to want to give me directions to the park. I keep being sent to Redwood Park. I'll be coming from the City. Does anyone have easy directions for me once I'm on the freeway or a link to a site which will help me get there. I'd rather get lost once I'm there. (I've gotten lost all over France and Italy; why not Oakland?)

Thanks a lot.

Linda - Using Mapquest, I was able to get directions using "Joaquin Miller Rd. & Skyline Blvd" as the destination address - I am not sure if this will load, but that got me to this page - and that intersection is shown on the park map I linked to in the post above.

Hope this helps. I am one of those people who can get there, but can't give directions!

Hey All
I just finally got thru all the related GTG email, and see that my husband David and I are not on the attendee list. We are both coming!! We came last year and had a great time. I think I will be bringing an erbazzone, a dish that was on Darci and I's cooking class syllabus in Reggio-Emilia in April. See you all there. I hope it is warm, I am getting to be a cold wimp!

Ruth - glad you will be joining us. Can't guarantee the weather - although today's forecast estimates we will be in the 70s, you may want to prepare for a nip in the air if the fog starts to roll in.

Tour Mama,

thanks for hyperlink. That's just what I needed. I tried the same thing on Mapquest, except I put the streets in the opposite order, and it didn't work.

I think it's temperamental (or literal.)

Pauline -
If we had cell phone reception in the park, we'd make a group call to Santa Fe and say "hey!"

Sorry you and Steve can't join us ... we'll hope to see you in the Bay Area sometime soon.

I know - this is a silly post, but hey - I'm compulsive. Having had my camera stolen in Montevideo (more on that another time), we need someone to take the "official" ST GTG pictures this year. So SOMEONE, bring photographic apparatus. (What am I thinking!!??!!??--Wendy is coming. All is well).

Yep. I know Wendy and Rob definitely plan to get some pictures. I'll have a small camera also.

Hi all,

I just wanted to make sure no one else was planning to make Gina DePalma's zucchini-olive oil cake. It's the only thing I've decided on so far and I know her recent book is mighty popular with the ST crowd.

See you soon!

You go, Marcy! I've been wanting to try that cake, but *haven't* wanted to turn on the oven lately.

Right now I'm thinking I'll bring a green bean, tomato, and dill salad. Maybe go crazy and throw some feta on top ... Wink (But that plan could change before Sunday!)

I plan to go totally 'ethnic' and bring 'Nasi Goreng' Malaysian style fried rice.

By the way, any soccer fans out there; the two men in the house said "Oh, it is same time as Euro cup finals' and I said 'OK, I can go alone' and right now they have graciously said that they will come and tape and watch the match in the evening...

Happy LOL Happy.

Of course both Rob and I will have our cameras, Judy. Actually, I just got mine back from Nikon - in time for this coming weekend, thank you. And there is always Marta.

Yumm, Nasi Goreng, are you going to bring the hot sauce with that, by any chance? Garlic Man

See you all, in the woods, Sunday.

More on directions. I just got out the reservation form, and lo and behold -- there are directions! They say -

To reach Roberts Regional park, take Hwy 13 to Joaquin Miler Rd., Go east up the hill and turn left on Skyline Blvd. Roberts Regional Recreation Area is 1 mi. up the hill on the right.

From Hwy 580 East, take the 35th Ave. exit. Once off the fwy, make a left onto 35th Ave. Continue up the hill which will become Redwood Rd. At the intersection of Redwood and Skyline make a left onto Skyline; stay on Skyline for one mile and make a right to stay on Skyline. Continue up the hill one mile, Roberts is on the right.

See you all tomorrow.

We did have fun, except for too much good food and too much good wine . . . which powered good conversations!

Just got home ourselves. We too had a great afternoon which was a wonderful respit. Terrific to see those we know and to meet new people.

Now we may have to deal with evacuating Rob's parents as the fire is moving north. Roll Eyes Hopefully not. will keep y'all posted.

Pictures to follow. I may need to wait for Marta to get home - her plane left fifteen minutes ago - if on time - to post in a specific spot. Tune in later....
