We're back! And yes, Palma is not speaking for us, we really hope that we can be there for Pinot and Ponies. Just need to figure out lodging for the weekend, but it will have to be after laundry and jet-lag.
Liz,
It would be so wonderful to see you again; after all, it was at your house almost two years ago that our Slow Travel GTG life started, amazing now that I think about it.
Can I join in for just the Pinot portion and skip the Ponies? The company picnic got moved to September (yeah!) and I am long overdue for a visit to my parents in San Diego. So I will need to hang out with them on Saturday during the day, but I am availble that night for dinner, drinks, whatever.
Great.. I guess we should start planning since this is in three weeks time!
For the ponies: we should all get to the racetrack at around 12:30 or 1:00. And let's all plan on being at the Vine between 7:30 and 8:00. I think the last race is at 6:00.
As for the Pinot - you can't bring it into the track (well, you can, but don't flash it) but we can certainly bring some to the Vine. They won't charge us corkage, as long as we buy some bottles too and take care of the server.
We are really planning on being there, I just need to work out the details, as we like to say.
Maybe what I need to know is whether this is a Saturday thing?, a Friday/Saturday thing?, so I can really look in earnest for a place to stay, and a puppy sitter as well.
Haven't had a drop of pinot since we returned, but by the end of August we will certainly be drinking again.
I'm thinking Saturday is such a long one, that most people will be happy with that - though I am up for something Friday as well, if people are already here!
We're not sure when we're coming, because now Brad has to fly to Oakland for a meeting Friday morning. He will fly back Friday afternoon, so I suggested he just fly to San Diego, and I will drive down and pick him up there. It solves the two car problem if we were coming from different places. I see no point in him driving home from Ontario to get me to turn around and drive to San Diego!
Did that make any sense? Anyway, we might be around Friday night!
Makes sense to me, Palma. Or he could fly back to Burbank Friday night, spend the night with us and we'll meet you at the track on Saturday! Seriously, our new plan is to drive down Saturday to Del Mar, have our fun with the ponies and then the pinot, spend the night and go to the Natural History Museum to see the Dea Sea Scrolls exhibit on Sunday morning before driving home.
I will sadly miss this grand shindig that Ms. Shannon is putting together as I have a work gig on the 25th and then leave for Guatemala on the 27th. Crazy weekend!
I will have to back out of the pinot and ponies GTG. My ex husband passed away 2 weeks ago on the day I was moving into my new place. One of the reasons I was moving to the San Diego area was to be close to my girls when the inevitable happened. Their father had been battling cancer for 10 years and it seems he waited until I was here before he passed. I need to be available for my kids for a while, so I don't want to commit to anything yet. Have a great time and place some lucky bets.

AnnieK - so sorry to hear your news. Hope to see you when everything calms down a little.
Marcia, brownies sound great! Palma is bringing one of those fantastic tortas she made for her GTG in Palm Desert.
Between Palma and I we will have five chairs, so if anyone has any fold-up chairs, can you bring them?
It has been foggy at the beach but if you plan to bring any wine to the Vine and store it in your car for the day, make sure to put some ice packs on it or something because it may get pretty warm even if it is foggy.
Let's plan on being at the Vine at around 7:30 or 8:00. The last race is at 6:35 PM but we don't have to stay for all ten races.
Retired soccer parents can always put their hands on a few folding chairs in the abyss of the garage. If Palma is bringing her torte, would you rather I bring some fruit or something like that. I can also bring the chips if you would like. Just tell me.
Re: Vine - should we bring some wine?, because we certainly can.
10 races? Um, maybe time out for a shower before an evening at the Vine
Palma's torte is savory, not sweet. Brownies sounds more decadent.
No need to bring wine to the Vine, unless there is something you want to bring, there won't be any corkage for us. But it's not necessary, they have plenty there.
7:30/8:00 sounds good. I just Googled The Vine to see what the address was and I checked out the menu and what do I see but "Shannon's Super Sexy Pate"! - I knew you loved this place, but little did I realize....
Anyway, it looks like a great spot and the appetizers all look so fabulous that I'm not sure we'll even need dinner.
Shannon, I'm desparately trying to come down for the ponies and pinot. I'm having a pretty hard time finding a hotel that doesn't cost as much as a week in italy. But I'll keep trying. Put me on the list.......

Hi everyone........I will bring water and some fruit to munch on.....Susa, I'll check around to see if there are any better deals for hotels. Shannon, what about in your neighborhood, too?
My place is tiny and my family is in and out of town, or I'd offer it up. But give me a rate range, so I can check around.......see you all soon, c
David and I are staying at a Hampton Inn about 3.5 miles from the Vine : here.
We got an AARP rate of $152.10 for the night. It's off the 8, probably not great for ambiance, but we stayed there once before for a wedding, and decided for the price and the fact we really only need a place to sleep one night, since we will be out and about the rest of the time, it would be fine.
