For all the Aussies out there wanting to buy "The Silver Spoon" GET IT NOW!!!

The Australian distributor for this book has already run out of stock and no more stock is expected until January.

Many bookshops (including my own) are pulling "The Silver Spoon" off the shelf until our Christmas catalogue starts in a few weeks' time. If you see it and you want it, don't delay, this is one hot item and once we sell out it will be a long wait until it comes in again.

For those of you wondering what it's like, I'd say it's a bit like Stephanie Alexander's Cook's Companion (except Italian food!) That sort of food encyclopaedia style. Not many pictures, just loads and loads of recipes arranged according to meat/fish/cheese/vegetables etc.

As Deborah and I have discovered (see below) the US distributor is also out of stock of this book. If any Slow Travellers in America want this book for Christmas, then get it now before it's too late!

Last night I saw the "rah rah get ready for Christmas rush movie" for Barnes & Noble booksellers.
They have featured Silver Spoon as the ideal gift from the cookbook section.
That means that every bookseller in every Barnes & Noble across the US will be handselling Silver Spoon. Our store has 10 copies in stock and another 50 on order.

Deborah, I have just checked the online inventory for our bookshop's US distributor (Baker and Taylor) and they are listing that the publisher is out of stock.

Your Barnes and Noble may have 50 copies on order with the publisher, but they won't be arriving any time soon.

It looks like the US is in a similar predicament to Australia. If you want The Silver Spoon for Christmas and see it on a shelf somewhere, get it now!

Dymocks in Brisbane has it in stock ($69.95) and it's still on the shelf.

But I'm just wondering: why wait until Christmas and pay premium price when you can wait two weeks more and pay half during the sales?

Bella Figura,

The book is on the shelf, but once they go, the bookshop won't get any more stock in until January (we're told.) The publisher is out of stock.

I seriously doubt that this book will be subject to any kind of discounting either before of after Christmas. It's a premium title and noone will have any problem selling it at the full price (although Borders has it discounted.) The book industry is dissimilar from the big discount department stores in this respect. We don't halve the prices of new releases after Christmas since most of them we can return to the publisher after a few months.

The Silver Spoon is being very heavily advertised and is featuring in many many Christmas catalogues, it's featuring in the Dymocks, Angus and Robertson and Borders catalogues.

I've worked in the book industry for a few years now, and believe me when I tell you to get it now if you want it for Christmas. If you aren't in a hurry for it, that's fine, but if you want to give it as a gift then don't delay.

Bambi, Thanks for the heads up. I just checked our back-order.
The distributor is not showing a future delivery date. In fact, the detail screen on this book is completely blank.
We sold all but three copies this morning. (My copy is safely tucked away!)
If it weren't that shipping is so expensive on such a heavy book, I'd buy the last three and auction them off on e-bay. Probably make a killing. Garlic Man
