so i recently went down to a local import store and picked up some Limonata and SanBitter (both made by San Pelligrino). The Limonata (little green bottles) was great, the SanBitter (tiny red bottles) was awful - as i should have known from the name i guess.

anyone ever tried SanBitter and liked it?

Does anyone else have any other italian drinks they like that can be purchased here in America (excluding italian wines of course)?

I love San Bitter. It is non alcoholic so I drink that when I am driving with my kids. Campari soda (same little bottle) is another favorite but that does have alcohol.

Chinotto is another San Pellegrino drink. Made from the bitter orange but has a flavor of cherry coke in a way. Aranciata is orange (kind of bitter).

I love martini bianco (vermouth) over ice in the summer. I also love grappa.

There are a ton of Italian drinks over here. Aperol was available but lost its importer. I do not know if you can get it any more.

Cynar is an artichoke bitter
Fernet Branca is a digestivo but I am not a fan
There is a brand of Amaro avaiable, begins with Monte something if I recal
Strega
Sambucca (try to find brands other than ROmana)
Limoncello (need to explore for a good brand, most are not very good-- my favorite is la Gioia and Mario Rasputti (or something like that, in a frosted glass bottle with lemons painted on and a clear sticker for the label)
Grappa

If you're lost, you're just having an adventure.......

Keep in mind that Italians tend to be partial to drinks that have a bitter flavor -- for example there's regular orange soda, "aranciata" as well as "aranciata amara". I personally like them too, but they're not everyone's cup of tea, so to speak.........

I see said the blind man - we'd been drinking the regular aranciata prior to staying in our rental house. In the supermarket, we bought another bottle to keep at home but when we drank it, we couldn't figure out why it tasted "funny." Chris insisted it must be grapefruit and not orange but I read the lable and it was orange. Now I realize it was aranciata amara.

I also love SanBitter! Don't write it off yet. Give it another try. Take a nice wine glass, moisten the rim with lemon juice and dip the rim in sugar for a nice frosty sugary rim. Put a lot of crushed ice in the glass and pour in the SanBitter to make it a bit foamy. I do this drink at work for myself and my co-workers all the time. They all love it!

Also, you can play Martha Stewart with the bottles! Rinse out the cute little bottles, line them up and put a different color flower in each of them!

And Cristina, you are right about the unavailability of Aperol in the US. Been looking for it without success! Also very yummy stuff!

well i tried a couple bottles, but am afraid to say this drink probably is not for me.. the first taste is not bad, but the after taste leaves me thinking 'cough syrup'. several other people in my italian class also said the same thing, perhaps it is because here in the states we are used to drinks being much sweeter... bitter is a taste not often on the american pallat.
