Winter is finally here. It's snowed about 6" and it's still coming down. I thought it would be a good day to make an apple pie. Tried the recipe from Martha Stewart Baking. Was very good. What do others cook when winter has arrived?
I make a pot of soup every weekend when the weather turns cold. Last week was traditional chicken soup with matzoh balls (everyone in the house but me was sick) and yesterday I made a huge pot of beef stock. Part of the stock will be for onion soup; the the rest for a spicy Yemenite vegetable-beef soup.
The pie looks very yummy. Is that snow I see in the background? Brrrr...
The veggie bin is filled with cole crops and other winter vegetables; broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, celery and carrot. That is always a sign of winter. Today I made potato, celery root and leek soup.
And we drove over to Eastern Washington a couple of weekends ago and purchased 10 lbs of fresh apples. I've also been busy with apples. Last week, I made a pie. This week it was an apple crisp.
Marta: The apple crisp looks wonderful. Yes, that is snow in the background. When I took the photo this afternoon, it had snowed maybe 6". It is now 10pm and it has snowed over 12". I shoveled the decks 3 times already and they are covered again. We knew winter was on its way. I had to make a pot of soup for dinner-made a Tuscan white bean. Just threw it together, but turned out very good-sauteed onions, celery, carrots together. Added some chopped canadian bacon. Then vegetable stock, and some veal stock made with a demi-glace I had. Then added fresh sage and rosemary, cannelini beans, tomatoes, and some small pasta. Very tasty and filling.
I was thinking just five minutes ago about putting up a pot of soup in the crockpot or on the stove today. I have some carrots from my CSA I need to use so I was thinking Lentil or Split Pea.
When the temps drop, I make grillades and grits or chicken and andouille gumbo. For dessert, an apple crisp, pear tart or sweet potato-pecan pie topped with chantilly cream.
