Good article. And it has a list showing the results of the tasting - great to take to the wine store.
I really loved the Proseccos while we were in Italy. It was my pre-dinner drink of choice. I need to find a good source for them here at home. Maybe Trader Joe's? Or maybe Beverages & More - they have a much larger inventory than TJ's.

Marian, I wish the NYTimes had left prosecco alone! Why tell the world and ruin a good thing? Next thing you know, it'll taste like a jug wine and sell for double the price. I hope no one reads the article or purchases the "best buy" ('cause it's my favorite prosecco).
I'm also a fan of Prosecco. You can also find it at World Market (formerly Cost Plus or vice versa). I learned on our wine tour in Rome that the Extra Dry Prosecco is sweeter than the Brut and that's what I prefer. I have seen the "frizzante" in our grocery store and wonder whether it's sweet or dry.
Great article by the way - thanks!

ahh..Prosecco I didn't participate in the "when was your first time" baci thread because I don't particularly like baci but Prosecco, now that's different.
I clearly remember my first time. It was 1996 and I was in Venice for Carnevale. Love at first sip. (martini glass will have to do)
It's nice to see how popular it's getting here in the States now and how many different types there are in the wine stores.

After Becky's Bat Mitzvah we invited some close friends and family back to the house. In addition to the normal beer and wine, we chilled some Prosecco. I'll never forget the look on my friend Deb's face when she came into the dining carrying an empty bottle, asking "You got anymore of this stuff?" Needless to say, it was a huge hit. Two weeks later, my sister in-law served it at my niece's communion, also a big hit.
I just found some lovely Prosecco at BevMo and for only $6.99 (w.member card)/bottle. That's almost embarrassing to write, but it's a fun summer drink for sure. Our Trader Joe's also had some last month but it's hit and miss there, at least selection-wise.
Nancy, The label says Dolce Vita - it just caught my eye as I was walking past the store and the cases weren't marked so I asked the clerk for a scan. He said it was a special, whatever that means, so I grabbed a few bottles. I rather like your idea of sampling, so I obviously need to go back. Marcia
While my sister was here visiting a couple of weeks ago we bought a bottle at the Italian restaurant we had dinner at. She never likes any wine I choose but she loved the Prosecco. I doubt highly she'll be able to buy it though I Hayti, MO. I may need to send her a care package.
Its funny we are talking about Prosecco. When we were in Italy last year we toured the region where the grapes are grown (Valdobbiadene). Its an absolutely phenomenal area. We bought some great prosecco from Villa Sandi, which I have not scene any bottles in the United States.
We just came off a cruise and we stopped at San Juan Puerto Rico for the day. Of all places we found this great bar/restaurant in the city. The restaurant was was called "Sophia", and believe it or not the cook was from Naples. They had this cool little bar and a great list of funny little drinks, and low and behold at the bottle of the menu, they had this drink with some other stuff in it with proseco, but all I wanted was the prosecco). This bottle they pulled from the fridge was not a no name brand but a bottle from "Valdobbiadene" where the grapes are grown to make Prosecco! The drink in Italy cost about $1.50 in a local bar, but since this was imported it cost about $6.00 a glass. "It was well worth every drop"
They sell proscecco here in Florida at the ABC liquor stores, but nothing as good as what you and get in Italy. Maybe soon the rage with come here and a better selection as well.

Lucky us, in rural Connecticut. My local package store (liquor store, wine store, state store) stocks 10 different proseccos. We'll try to work our way through them this summer and report back.
