Well, I just ordered two cases of Dr Pepper, some tootsie rolls, cinnamon tic tacs and four cans of canned yams in from my website in Melbourne, Victoria.

Oh happy Christmas season to me!

I did this last year when I discovered the site, and had grape soda, root beer, cornbread muffin mix and angel food cake mixes as well.

I suppose you all can go down to your local store and buy this sort of thing. Not here in downtown Tuggeranong!

Now for the big question - I should do a poll - should I hide it all when it comes or should I share?

Hide them!!
My sister lives in Boston, so when I go to visit I carry a suitcase full of 'southern things' Buffalo Rock gingerale, shrimp boil, pecans, and our whistlestop marinade.
One evening we were going to one of her friends house for dinner and I suggested a bottle of marinade as a house warming gift. She said 'are you kidding- I'm not giving that away!' We ended up taking an expensive bottle of wine instead. Wine

And I just received my new order of Ferrero Pocket Coffees. I hid them in the back of the fridge - hope Bill doesn't find them!

I actually order lots of things on the internet - it is my favorite way to shop!

For instance, there are some McCormick spices that I can't find in my market, so I order a year's supply on the 'net. Used to order French cheese for special occasions - it arrived within a day by FedEx.

Almost forgot this one because it hasn't arrived yet, but I ordered some Amedei chocolates on Amazon.com. They are shipped directly by Amedei.

You can find practically anything on the internet - shipping is sometimes expensive, but I try to order six months or a year's supply to minimize the shipping cost.

While I prefer to patronize my local merchants, there are just some things you can't get locally that you have to buy on line if you want them. Primarily, I get specialty items like imported tomato paste, certain dried pasta, olive oil, etc.

Great. You had to go and bring up Fran's chocolates. Those little "gold bars" are incredible. I would LOVE some coconut gold bars but I would eat them all at one time and that would be very, very bad.

Sure, I order WINE on the internet all the time.
(since the Supreme Court overturned "no intersate shipping" state laws.)

Cherry Valley - what a pretty location name!

I don't think I'd be game to order chocolate from overseas. (Although I did get right up to to the click on the Paypal link on the site you gave me!) I've been really good and haven't had any for two weeks now. Also it's hot as heck here now and I'm sure it would melt. The USA foods site was selling off US chocolate at reduced prices that had melted.

My name is Leslie and I AM a chocoholic.

I think about it constantly. It's almost Christmas and I usually get a few boxes of Cadbury Roses chocolates from my students. Those and chocolate liquor cherries are my favorites.

I LOVE those sea salt caramels from Fran's. Lucky for me, she's local and I can get them from her shop.

I recently ordered a flavor of Twinings tea that you can't get here - Vanila, Camomilla, and Honey.

I have also ordered things from Harry & David, Swiss Colony, and Honey Baked Hams to send as gifts during the holidays. I'd like to try ordering lobsters from Maine for a special dinner some time.

Since I live in the culinary wasteland that is Dublin, I order quite a lot of food items off the internet. Granted, as more speciality stores open up in Ireland I am becoming less dependent on the internet but for the past five years I have relied on it to keep me supplied with the Italian and South African foodstuffs that were hard to find here.

Now I often turn to the internet simply because it is cheaper to buy online. It is pretty good and takes some of the hassle out of shopping...

Another thing I order are dried porcini mushrooms. When you go to the store you can probably buy an ounce or so of dried porcinis for $3 to $5. Online, I find a pound for between $25 and $45 depending on grade.

Volpi's of St. Louis: Has anyone ordered from Volpi's? They've made prosciutto for 100 years, and make a number of Italian salamis.

Deborah and Kim can speak to that, in fact, I'm leaving for Springfield, Il, via St Louis tomorrow morning.

Do I need to make a side trip? Smile

Oh I just got SO excited - there was a big delivery truck at my door! I thought it was my Dr Pepper! Frown

Nope, Alessandro's new miniature, one inch by a quarter of an inch, iPod shuffle. The other one, the good video one got stolen by a wicked, evil classmate while I was in Italy.

It's hot, I want a Dr Pepper and a tootsie roll.

39 cans of Dr Pepper left and 14 tootsie rolls. I can tell you that proofreading end of year reports is SO much better with a glass of Dr Pepper! Cool

I've just been back onto the USA foods website and ordered more stock.

Looking back at this thread, I discovered that it was exactly a month ago that I put the last order in.

So, now I'll be watching for a new delivery of: 48 cans of Dr Pepper, 12 cans of grape soda, 12 cans of cherry Coke, a packet of cinnamon flavored Certs and 20 more tootsie rolls.

I just got 121 liter bottles of the real stuff italian olive oil from I Gourmet. We aren't going to discuss how expensive this is.

I regularly order stuff for OTHER people as gifts on the web. Harry and David get lots of my business - their reindeer food and moose poop are wonderful.

Leslie if you look you can find the recipe for homemade tootsie rolls on the web. They are darn close to the real thing. As to Dr. Pepper? Have you thought about just ordering the syrup? I am sure somebody in your town has a pre-mix machine that they might let you use to make a couple of liters at a crack.

One of the things that was interesting was this discussion on NPR about the global warming effects of ordering food over the internet. Also how catastrophic environmentally the consumption driven american Christmas is. I was totally shocked. And we aren't just talking about "I will be home for Christmas". Landfill use increases by 20%, Food consumption goes up 25%, those strawberries you are eating that came thousands of miles? another impact.

I am going to start to try to eat a little more locally which is easy for me here in the southwest which supplies about 25% of the nation's winter fruit and vegies. I know this isn't a option for many people but I would like to do my bit.

Well here's the recipe for tootsie rolls. Try them - I found them to be exactly like really fresh ones here in USA.

http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,1977,FOOD_9936_28846,00.html

Gives you more room for Dr. Pepper.

Woo hoo! Looks good. I've got lots of Karo corn syrup. And I love this serving description:
"These make a glamorous presentation when wrapped in gold or silver foil paper and served on a silver platter."

Mine (from Melbourne) are in a paper bag pushed to the very back of my underwear drawer. Shhh! Don't tell the elves!

And they don't know that I reordered either! While I will share the grape soda with them, I want the cherry cokes all to myself!

Need *greedy* Rudolf emoticon, specially for me.

Leslie
