Apparently in a momment of confusion I agreed to provide a chocolate fountain for a friend of mine who is retiring and having a big party on Sunday.
Has anyone dones this before? We've rented the fountain. Do I use a special type of chocolate or will any chocolate work? Do I mix anything in?
We are having mini cupcakes, fruit, pretzels, chips, mini macaroons, marshmallows, angel food cake squares, oreos, graham crackers, mini rice krispie squares, and peanut brittle as the 'dippers'.

Jerry, I've seen these at parties, but I've never done one myself. Here's a detailed description of how it works on Wikipedia - it gives you the options for what kind of chocolate to use, with or without additives.

Jerry, those damn things are a mess! I hired someone here in LA to do one at an event and thank GOD I did. That sucker was sloppy, but it went over well. I'm a dark chocolate fan on sweet fruits like bananas and strawberries, myself.
If you rented the fountain then they should have provided full instructions. There's a whole thing about what kind of chocolate to get, the amounts, etc., that is important to know. If push comes to shove, pull a Google and look it up.
We had a 'dry' run of the chocolate fountain today for breakfast. It all seemed to be in order! LOL Normally I don't like milk chocolate but we've decided to use it because it has a lower melting point.
It was very messy though. I had chocolate everywhere (which wouldn't be a bad thing in some cases).

We had a chocolate fountain for dessert at the Father's Day barbecue last weekend at the winery in Santa Cruz. Messy yes, good yes, but I think with bamboo skewers, at least for fruit and chunks of cake, it could be less messy.
I dislike the chocolate from these fountains because you usually have to add vegetable oil to it for the proper consistency. Not my idea of a luscious dessert.
