Flame tamers are available here too, I buy them to put under my ceramic pots I cookwith. in Italy they are called a spargefiamme. Mine look like iron netting.. in a ring..they may even have the heavier iron ones too

I've also read that in a pinch you can piggyback one burner "grill" on top of another, which effectively raises the pot further from the flame...you would have to be sure that it was stable though, which could be tricky!
