So I'm a big soup person. I just love soups.

Today, for some reason, I'm craving some good tortilla soup. It's not a particularly common soup to find on typical menus, so when I see a restaurant offers it, I try to order it and see how it tastes.

Now, I'm not a connoisseur, by any means, but I know what I like. I must say, despite the fact that it is a chain restaurant, my favorite place to get tortilla soup is Islands (not sure how widespread they are, so I don't know if many of you are familiar with the place). Other places where I've had it either make it smell and taste a bit too much like chili (which I don't mind, but it's not tortilla soup to me), or the flavor just isn't as pleasing.

So now, I'd like to try making some of my own. Does anyone have any recipes for it that they might be willing to send my way?

Ryan,
That is so funny because I'm not a chain person either but my parents took me to Islands once when I was in San Diego specifically for the Tortilla Soup - and it was delicious.

Sorry, I don't have a recipe for you, but I definitely share your definition of a good tortilla soup. If I come across any that look worth trying, I'll let you know.

Not that this is going to help you, but chicken tortilla soup was the soup of the day at Pavilions yesterday. I took a peek and it smelled delicious.

Like Krista, I will send you a recipe if I find one.

Rick Bayless serves a great tortilla soup at Frontera Restaurant here in Chicago. I've made it a few times. Here's a reprint of his recipe.

Sometimes we add shredded, cooked chicken for a heartier soup. The pasilla chiles make the dish!

A really really easy way to make tortilla soup that I use is this....basically I saute whatever veg I have around that would be compatible (onions, garlic, peppers), thow in some cilantro and shredded chicken if you want. (as someone mentioned) Then I just dump in a few jars of salsa (I have homemade luckily enough so I know its good!)and squeeze a lime and then thin it out to the consistency you want by adding a chicken or vegie broth or just water. Then I adjust the seasons. It is sooo quick and very tasty. Oh yeh, and don't forget the tortilla chips.... Uh-uh No! and usually sprinkle with cheese.

Wonderful, wonderful! Thank you, and please feel free to add more if some of you out there know of them!

Jane:
You are right. I've been lazy about that. I'll probably be too busy to do it until Monday, though (concert tonight, going camping for the weekend). I'll have one up soon though.

Ryan, I know I am coming in late on this thread but I was browsing for recipe ideas for this weekend and came across it.

There is a fantastic recipe from an old Fine Cooking magazine that I make, and I was able to find it on the internet, so here it is.

Fine Cooking Mag's Tortilla Soup

It's very tasty, and easy; check it out.
