We wish to rent a villa in Italy in September and use it as our base. Is is a problem renting a hotel room for a night in Florence, Rome, etc. without a prior reservation?

Welcome to SlowTrav, Jerry.

Yes, I would advise you getting a reservation prior to your trip. September is a popular month for travel to Italy, and even if you were able to find a room upon arrival, it very well may not be in an area or price range that you were planning on. Take a look at our hotel reviews for some suggestions. Also browse around the rest of the site for info on planning, instructions for travel in Italy, and other goodies. And feel free to tell us more about your travel plans!

Thanks, Amy

Our last visit, years ago, was on a guided tour so I guess we will have to be more specific in our plans. I really didn't want this trip to be like a "guided tour".

In a specific hotel, you should play safe and have a reservation. But if you just need a hotel room, walking straight off the street usually gets you one in the first or second hotel, short of some unusual event in town.

It depends on lots of factors...including what your requirements for a hotel are. If it is just a place to sleep, you will likely find something on the spur of the moment, unless there is a major event going on. If you have certain expectations and don't want to risk the possibility of having to spend some of your precious vacation time checking out hotel options, book in advance.

I always use the booking service in the train station for last minute reservations. they know who has empty rooms, you tell them how many stars and they do the calling for a very small fee!
Hotels call in what they will give the rooms for and it is usually much less, only for a 1 or 2 night stay!
