Slow Traveler dragonpat recently posted about her experiences with the ferries between Capri and the mainland. A search of this forum should turn up several of her helpful posts.

That link has a dialog box on it. You need to pull it down with the arrow and select one of the options and click on it.
Here is what you will see for the naples/Capri option.

You can get to Capri from Naples or Sorrento mostly, but I am not sure which you are interested in?

It takes something like an hour to get to Capri from Naples, but only something like 30 min from Sorrento. None of the ferries run after dark. The dark starts a lot sooner in the winter.

You can buy tickets earlier in the day for later if you like but then you are locked into that trip. We just used to show up at the port when we wanted to leave (for trips that are heavily traveled like this) and bought tickets on the next ferry/hydrofoil that was leaving. For Naples/Capri there are 3 companies selling tickets and the tickets are NOT interchangable.

Did you find one ferry line to be superior to the others? Or were they all about equal reqarding comfort and timeliness?

Thanks -
Colleen, tentatively planning a 2010 trip to the Amalfi coast

caremar now services ferry service from the Calata porta Massa (very near beverello port) now instead of the beverello port like they used to. the Caremar ferries carry cars in addition ot passengers. The caremar ferries were the slowest and most likely to be late.

Jet and Alilauro were very similar.

In defense of Caremar (which is a Tirrenia affiliated operator), one should point out that its "traditional" (slow) ferries are the cheapest way to reach Capri and Ischia. Also, the best photos and videos of the Bay of Naples can be taken from the open-air top deck of the Caremar "traditional" ferry, rather than from the enclosed hydrofoils. There are fewer ferries, however, than hydrofoils.
