We will be driving into Rome from Tuscany on a Saturday. Can someone tell us the best place to drop off the car-Airport or downtown Rome. We will be staying on via del pelligrino. We are used to driving in city traffic. Suggestions please!!! :-) Thank you.
LoriCO, Rome doesn't qualify as city traffic. It is an entirely different universe so be warned. We always drive everywhere. Always, everywhere. Except Rome. Since you are coming in from the north, most car rental companies have locations at or near the Borghese Gardens and you can taxi to your hotel from there. Much better than going all the way out to the airport. Do check the hours of operations in advance though. Carolyn
Your rental/hotel is near the campo di Fiori. I would drop at Via del Cipro. Its an easy entry into the city and you can taxi or bus to your destination. Much closer than the Borghese area and much easier to get to.
I have some notes on the site about returning the car at Rome airport and at the bottom of the page are some notes about returning in Rome: Italy: Instructions - Driving - Rome Airport
The last trip we tried to drop off at a location in the north of Rome, but could not find it, gave up and went to the airport. That was the day of the blackout and the airport was a zoo. I think it is best to dropoff in Rome, but get very detailed driving directions. I was using some from maporama I think and they were useless.
We used mappy and the Michelin city map of Roma. We also studied them carefully and were able to plot the Mappy course on the map. The issue with Mappy is that it accounts for every name change in roma. Street names change all the time and each piazza has a name. So instead of telling you to take the Lungotevere to such and such a bridge, it tells you to take lungotevere dead Italian number one, to Piazza dead Italian number 2 and continue to Lungotevere dead Italia number 3. three pages of information for what were really about 10 turns to get us to our appartment and then to the rental agency. But we did it easily.
