I brought my dog from Chicago (aka Heartwormsville, Illinois...state bird: Mosquito) ten years ago, and my vet here told me that there is no need for heartworm meds where we live. If you are up in the hills where skeeters are rare you should be fine. Be aware that you will need to have your animals implanted with an id chip (some places still tattoo, but most implant) when you get here, and keep your dogs immunized and on a leash or enclosed. If they get away from home and cause a car accident or bite someone, you're liable. Rebecca

I live in Friuli, a long way from Umbria, but still in the mountains. My vet recommends giving our dog heartworm preventitive at least in the summer/fall months. Even if the risk is lower than other places, do you really want to gamble with your loved ones' health? The meds aren't that expensive. It's worth it just so you don't have to worry.
