I keep reading about San Gimignano being a great place to stay as a base because you can do your day trips from their and experience the town without the crowds in the AM & PM. This sounds great to me. But I'm not sure if I want to stay right in town or just outside (walking distance). Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Argman,

Here is a discussion thread with fair coverage from both the "stay in San Gimignano" and "stay outside" cheering sections. Oh, come to think of it, that thread might not answer your questions because it was more of a debate about staying in San Gimignano versus staying 3 or 4 km out.

Here is another thread about staying just beyond the town walls.

I believe the comune of San Gimignano is planning the construction of three modern Tall Towers, each 60 stories high, to accommodate all those people who want to stay outside the town; the last I heard on RAI, they were to be built at S. Gulago in Folla about 2km outside town, projected completion date in 2007.

Seriously, is there a guidebook out there that suggests one not stay in town? That would account for these queries! San Gimignano is busy busy during the day -- as this daytripper can vouch to -- but people on this board who know the area well say it's quite pleasant and uncrowded in the evenings.

I'm going to resurrect a rather old thread/trip report from 2001. Paul from Oregon stayed a week in San Gimignano without a car and enjoyed it. He discusses dealing with the crowds during the day, places to eat (2001) and a day trip to Siena.

Have just had a look at the old thread and was interested in the gum that was mentioned a couple of times for warding off upset travelling tummies. Does anyone know if you can still get it and what it is called?
Appreciate any information,

Robyn
