Can you just get yourself a room in a hotel instead? I am sure there are many affordable places in Rome at this time of the year. If I were you I will just jump on the plane and will visit my host in the hospital with a big balloon saying: Get Well Soon! He would love that

Mizz Eve, granted there's a difference between free and very cheap (and even, free isn't free either if you bring a gift to your host), have you looked into the Beehive that was brought up onboard here ten days ago? Any street smarts one might need to have for such housing, we all know you have! Check it out, it really looks very nice, and at 18 euro a nite, the price is unbeatable.
That sounds like a great idea! Whoever said you either have money or time had it just about right, but maybe just maybe it might be a great time to really get to know Rome!

Don't give up a trip to Rome so easily.....definately check out the Beehive. You cannot beat the price and if the Beehive doesn't work out, I'm sure there are last minute hotel deals you can score and/or use the old Credit Card and rack up some miles for the next trip. Is this a possibility?

It is my friend's FATHER that has to have surgery, not my friend. I still can't stay with my friend though because he'll be with his father outside of Rome. He did say that I could come later in the month. I no longer have faith in him and doubt that he'll come through later this month or any other time.
I did check into the Beehive, but they only have a "bed" available for a few days. I really can't afford that anyway.
On the bright side, Delta has been fabulous. Since I am my grandparents' primary caretaker, their doctor provided a letter for me to give to the airline. Delta arranged to keep my ticket open for 30 days and will give me a full refund if I choose not to use it within that time period. I couldn't ask for anything more from Delta.
I should be on an airplane flying over the Atlantic at this time tomorrow. Oh well, there's always South Beach.
Personally after reading your blog about the "boyfriend" in Rome taking you to the weird sex club places.. he is the last person I would stay with! I would have used the trip to meet someone new!
Miss Eve: I too think it may have worked out for the best. Yes, go to South Beach! I am going with friends the weekend of February 6th and the weekend of March 12th. See you there?

Diva, I'm sure that you are stating what a lot of people are thinking, including a small part of myself. I must point out that he is not now, nor has he ever been a "boyfriend."
Kelly - March 12 is when my girl friend wants to go to SoBe. I think that's spring break. Is it going to be crazy there at that time?
probably nothing compared to your Rome experience!!! I am sure there are places where all the college kids hang out, but could it be the whole city? maybe?
I have only seen spring break in Sandra Dee films! maybe you'll meet Paul Anka!
Sorry if I sounded too much like MOM.. I am getting old...
I was in Miami last year during spring break. And so was MTV! During the day, you see quite a bit of colelge kids on the beach and on collins and ocean etc. At night is another story. Because Miami is very strick with checking id you really do not see very many college kids in the clubs/bars and since they can't afford the restaurants you don't see them there either.
I just made a hotel reservation last night. Got a one bedroom style suite at the Dorchester Hotel (17th and collins) for $159 a night. I booked through the website for Florida Hotels and Vacation guide. Better price than other websites or the hotel directly.
Kelly, I just talked to my friend who owns a condo in SoBe. He said that it's booked Mar 10-30. But, It's open Feb 1-11 & 17-28. Maybe I'll go down Feb 4 - 10. Hmmmmm. This maybe another solo trip as I don't think that my girlfriend can travel at that time.
So is South Beach in Miami? Is it part of Miami Beach? Why don't I know this?
We spent a couple of weeks in Miami Beach in the late 80s and LOVED it! I remember Joe's Stone Crab - big restaurant that specializes in - - - Stone Crab. Steve tried to order something else and the waiter said "most people order the Stone Crab" so he did.
South Beach is the southern part of Miami Beach. The area that people hang out at when they go there is inside of and around the red oval. I'm not sure if Miami Beach is part of Miami proper, or if it is its own city.
Funny, I was just talking about Joe's Stone Crab with my friend who is in Miami Beach at the moment. I've never eaten there myself, but I understand it's very popular.
South Beach is very hip,all the models hang out there. Gianni versace had a beatiful house there ( he was shot in front of it) all the big designers have shops there.
There is also a cuban faction, great coffee! and some great places to eat Cuban. Beaches, Beaches, Beaches.. people cruising the main drive in fabulous cars.. Very see and be seen!
I spent a few days in South Beach a few years ago. The Art Deco architecture in the area is wonderful-- we went on some walking tours with The Miami Design Preservation League. I actually prefered the neighborhood a few blocks away from the beach for its "real life" atmosphere, away from the hotels and clubs.

They don't accept reservations. Be prepared to stand on line waiting for a table.
This thread is making me feel buying back my condo there - 12.. Meridian Avenue, across from Flamingo Park, 3 blocks from Lincoln Road and 4 from the beach - great location. But, I don't think I could afford it now. In the 3 years I had my condo its value had more than duplicated. That's how real estate is in South Beach. Anyway, I can't complain. If I kept it, I wouldn't be going to the Carnival again this year or maybe never again Have fun in SoBe Mizz Eve. This was my neighborhood

I was just in SoBe last year, see the first paragraph of my trip report
I'm starting to get the mood for going again. I think that I'll try to reserve a flight for Feb 4-10. Maybe we can get together for a drink Kelly.
Since I'm allegeric to the sun (yes, it sucks), I want to plan out other things to do in the daytime. Perhaps, I'll start a thread on the Everything Else board for SoBe tips from everyone. As always, I'm especially interested in modern art, emerging artists, used clothing, and sushi.
Funny story relating to SoBe......
The first day on my job (the one I'm no longer at), I was sitting in the conference room filling out forms, trying to decide whether I wanted the Delta Dental regular or Delta Dental Preferred insurance when my new boss, a partner at the law firm walks in. I tell him that I just returned from SoBe. Now, you have to picture this guy, he's 50+ y.o., 6'4", cannot weigh less than 350 lbs and only wears washed out black Dockers, a black polo shirt and a black suit jacket that's seen better days. He asks me, "don't you feel uncomfortable in South Beach?" Puzzled I say, "no why would I?" He replies, "because everyone's so thin and beautiful there." I should have known that our relationship would go downhill from there. Clearly, my days were numbered. Alas, hindsight is 20/20.
P.S. Yes, Diva I made the sig tag. I used PSP7 to create it. I'm working on some new ones.
